Hi

Just recently my tach and speedometer stopped working.

Have a look at the photo. The red indicator arm is below the little stopper nib.

When the car is off it drops below the nib as shown. When the car is on the indicator rotates clockwise and stops at the nib.

My stereo replicates the dash with graphical controls and I can see from the electronic dash that the tach and speedometer are getting a proper input signal.

What the heck happened?

Thanks

Alex

had some ford's do this for some reason there is no stop on high side so on test swing on start up some swing to far and go around on back side of stop. On the ford you can take a strong magnet and get them to swing back around ram I am not sure you can try it and see before you pull cluster to do it the other way. If it was me and I had to pull cluster I would make sure I only done it once make me some stops so it cant do that again had some repeat this later on

So you mean the needle swung too far clockwise and now when the truck starts and the needle tries to go clockwise it is blocked by that stop nib?

yes you can rotate them counter clockwise back around and should be fine at least they are that way for ford's

Ok

Just wondering why this happened now and to both the tach and speedometer?

And what happens if the needle moves clockwise past the 12 o’clock will this happen again?

Hi

I tried a rare earth magnet and couldn’t get the needle to rotate.

Guess I have to take the dash apart to get to the instrument panel.

Sometimes you can get lucky, but most of the time you don't. Hopefully you can get it fixed.

yeah its a crap shoot normally cause it all depends on the magnet available and how far the clear lens is from cluster

I have found a few places that can fix the instrument cluster but they will take a while to ship it back.

Just wondering if I find an instrument cluster at a scrapyard can I just swap them?

Will the odometer be correct?

Thanks

Alex

No, the odo is per cluster. Your mileage and VIN are stored on both the PCM and cluster. I do not know what will happen if you put a "temporary" cluster in with different mileage and VIN, then put your original back in. If I were to guess, you'd get an emission fail due to a mileage mismatch.
