Wth is this? Block heater on gas motor?

Pure water in a engine , that crap went out in what ,1920? Antifreeze is to protect the engine from rust, as well as cold temperatures . Also the boiling point is way higher. P.S. if you go too strong, you will lose ground , you can buy antifreeze rated at - 50or more these days.

Lol I didnt mean straight water. I'm in Texas so honestly dont know the negative rating of anti freeze. Or coolant as we call it. Hahaha.

I was just thinking out loud as to if a block heater would be more beneficial than an oil pan heater

The block don't care if it's hot really. Like yeah it does helps atomize the fuel a bit better but - 50 oil is more like trying to push heavy grease through your engine. Heat it up and it works great.

Geez I wonder why they roll over so much better just using a block heater at -40.Oil must be getting warmed up some.

Watch your oil pressure and oil temp that'll tell the story I'd say block heater hardly does anything. Your oil temp will still say it's minuses, the reason your engine feels like it starts better is because the coolant in the heads makes the cylinder warm allowing fuel to vaporize and ignite better its a false sense of security. I can have my pan heater plugged in for an hour and my oil is at ¼ the running temp. Not to sound like an ass but you can go using the block heater as much as you want, i prefer my engine to get oil quickly on cold startup so it lasts longer but that's just me lol.
Metal on metal is not ur friend and just think how long it takes the oil to go through that cold engine and get to your rockers and push rods. [emoji23] Cringe.

Crawl underneath your truck at -40 and stick your hand on the oilpan,then come back and tell us how much the block heater has warmed up the oil,lol.Brandon is correct an oilpan heater makes a world of difference in how fast the oil pressure builds at -40. Nobody really cares if you don't run an oilpan heater,your truck will still start okay at -40 on just the block heater,but your posts lead me to believe you think an oilpan heater is a waste of money,when in reality they do more for keeping an engine happy at -40 then a block heater does

I always plugged in my '02 CTD block heater which made it run so much smoother when it started in cold weather. In REALLY cold weather, I stuck a magnetic heater on the oil pan, which helped IMHO. Of course, the oil pan on the Cummins wasn't 15' behind the front bumper like it is on this hemi V8 thing.
