I'm totally fine with turbo tech; large displacement torque when needed, small displacement fuel econ when not. What I'm not okay with is sacrificing longevity by using parts that are fragile. Design a turbo system that is still robust at 100k and I'm all in.

Kinda simple, go from direct injection to port injection, mission accomplished. Of course the "lab" numbers in DI is xyz % better then PI, thus is why we must live with DI, the gov't has decided for us, sacrifice longevity of a small % of lab mileage.

Not just on the injector side though... exhaust bits that warp and leak, turbo bearings starved of oil flow, cooling systems that can't handle heat load over time, bottom ends that can't handle prolonged boost pressures...

Don't late model Ford F150 EB engines have both port and DI? I know some manufacturers back peddled a bit and added some port injection to allow fuel to wash across the intake valves, preventing the carbon build up that happens on intake valves on DI engines.

It's not the turbos themselves that scares me, it's all the associated hardware added. Intercoolers, aftercoolers, blow off valves, the lube system for the turbo. The packed engine bay..

Just saying if you want me to buy a turbo it has to be port injection, not direct injection or hybrid or any other thing. I am way more interested in longevity them 15% gas mileage in a lab that translates to what at the wheels? As they keep screwing with gov't oils, there is going to be no protection or longevity in future engines, JAPAN.

Totally.

Our 2019 Nissan Pathfinder has the old school VQ35 V6 that Nissan has had forever and has won awards with, but the 'finer' minds at Nissan added direct injection to it starting in 2017. The VQ35DD engine. It's a sweet running mill, but because of the DI, it literally turns the engine oil dirty diesel black as soon as you go around the block. I'm talking disturbing sooty black looking. So bad that I scrapped the 0w20 recommendation after the first OCI on it and went with 5w30 and change it at 3000mi intervals which is a PITA. We bought it with 24K miles on it and have 38K currently.

I don't think people realize how good Nissan's are from 2003 to right before the latest generation. Their trucks simply last forever. They lost to toyo because of the "looks" and function. Not because of their simple engines and transmissions. Wanna buy something old that has a chance to last many more years, and super easy to work on, get a post 2003 Nissan Frontier before they upgraded I think 2019.

Yeah I think it's the 2020 Nissan Frontier that is "updated" with a DI engine and something like a 9spd auto. Other than that it's the same old mid 2000's model year design. You're right though. Up to 2019, they're good old school trucks. My FIL has a 2017 crew cab, long bed 4x4. It's got the turning radius of a bus and V8 fuel economy, but is a reliable truck for sure. He had them as service vehicles prior to retiring which is why he chose his 2017 in the first place.

Yep that’s what they did! Also yes that’s what bothers me too.

I think in Japan they only run their vehicles for like 5 years then turn them in that’s one reason why they don’t know how to work on anything
