anybody else notice crappy shift points that cause the engine to lug real low?
Like 1000 rpm @45 mph?

Its just a little irritating and im wondering how many people are blaming this on muffler droan when its really the engine struggling?

watching the tach and the echo light, there are many times that if it would just down shift the rpms would be happy and the lugging droan would be advoided .
So if you put your foot into it to make it down shift (slowly leaning into it, it takes a decent amount) the eco light goes off and it downshifts. Instantly the droan lugging sound clears up!

The question is, did Chrysler ever address this w/ some type of update?

Unless you either drive in tow/hail mode or disable the MDS system the truck is programmed to shift down as soon as it can in order to help achieve better MPG. There's nothing wrong with it- it's doing what it was told to. However, many of us don't care for the way it drives so we revert to one of the two options I mentioned above.

Yup, but that's why I ask this, Im thinking mine dosent downshift easily or should I say often, or maybe I should say when I feel like it should should.
(its tough to describe)

Think of driving a standard in top gear going only 35 mph.

You're right; I should have said upshift. I tries to spin as few rpm's as possible at every opportunity.

I increased the part throttle shift points with the DS Intune to solve the early shifts. Shifts great now. Turning off MDS doesnt solve the early shifts.

I keep the MDS off, I turn tow haul on below 50, increased my shift points 200.

It's seems tow/haul mode is the only fix minus a tuner. Manual shift has it "lugging" as well. I have the same thing on my 2014 6spd

Yeah, it's the tuning from the factory to aid MPGs, you could start getting on it more and it'll adapt to the more aggressive driving and hold the gear a little longer, but if you coast a lot or drive on the interstate it'll learn the safer driving and upshift sooner. You could also tap the throttle 1/4 to halfway to make it downshift. That works for me when I need to downshift, or just use the ERS to upshift manually or keep it at a certain gear.

Both my 11 and 13 have this dirty habit. Being at 7,500 ft, even the mighty Hemi doesn't have the sack to lug around this huge truck at 900 RPM!

Running in Tow/Haul mode does work, but it's far to aggressive a soulution for day to day driving. Guess I really need a tuner.

glad to hear im not the only one that's dealing w/ this.

I do have a hard time believing that this helps w/ mpg though. I could see if it just shifts to the next gear early to drop some R's, yes that might save some gas.
but if it "sticks" in too high of a gear during lower speed cruising, your going to have to give it more gas to pull too high of a gear, no?

This why a re-gear is so good for these trucks. It keeps the RPMs up slightly and it takes some load off the engine, add a trans tune to the mix and you've got a whole different feeling truck. It is easily my favorite mod.

I hate how long it takes my '12 w/ 5.7 and 3.92's to shift from 2nd into 4th. No need to have the engine "screaming" at nearly 2k rpms when driving at 24mph in a subdivision. This is one time I want it to drop to 1k rpms and let me putt through the subdivision.

Otherwise, I agree, mine seems to upshift too soon, and takes a lot of pedal to downshift.

Just another reason I hate autos.

this thread has nothing to do about upshifts, it about down shifting to keep the R's up and prevent lugging.

I called Chrysler to see if there where any updates for the computer. they checked VIN and said nope nothing new.

The higher upshifts seem to also cause quicker downshifts. I dont know how the trans tuning is written but they do appear to be linked. The tuner for older model trucks allow you to adjust both upshift and downshift points but for now the increase in upshifts does seem to help with keeping rpms up during downshifts. Just my observation. The stock shifting patterns of this truck drove me crazy until I got the DS tuner with HF tune. Now its so much fun to drive and Im still averaging 17mpgs with MDS off and higher shift points.

This is specifically why I bought advanced tranny tuning when I got my superchips tuner. I changed almost all of my shift points, and no longer runs at 1000rpm at 45 mph

I have a 14 with the 5.7 I just bought about 3 weeks ago and it is doing the same thing. What tuner will make this stop and downshift like a normal truck. Sorry I know nothing about tuners or how to install them. Also will this void the warranty on the truck. I tried putting it in 6 and driving that way and still was around 1000 rpm at 45 and have to nail the gas to downshift. I really like the truck but it is very annoying to say the least. I really thought something was wrong until I found this thread. Tow/haul seems to help but seems like the rpm's are a little high at times in tow/haul. I guess I may get the tuner if that will make it normal and will not void the warranty.

What tranny do you have and how many miles have you driven it? From what I've heard it takes some time for the computer to learn how you drive and it will adjust how it shifts

It is a 6 speed 5.7 crew cab express 4x4 and only has about 700 miles on it. I may be crazy but it didn't seem as bad wit the lagging shifting until just the last few days. That is why I was thinking something could be wrong. thanks for the reply

I have this problem with my 2010 even. I just put it in tow/haul mode when in town. I will be adding a tuner later this spring though.

With shift points, I have an issue with it not downshifting on rolling turns, like turning onto a street. It's like it gets hung up in 2nd and I have to goose it a little to get her down to 1st. Irritating it is, fixed it will be.
