2014 Coolant temps

2014 5.7L with 115k on it. Temp never got above 221 ever in the 7 years I’ve owned it. Recently got the thermostat, radiator and coolant changed. Its gotten up to 224 degrees a couple times since then. Any ideas on what could be causing this or am I worrying about nothing?

Either there is air in the system causing flow issues or your new thermostat is trash, which isn't uncommon.

ON A COLD MOTOR, remove the rad cap and start the truck. Stand there for 10min with it running, topping it off anytime there is room to fit more coolant in. There are fancier ways to do that process, but that has always worked for me.

If that doesn't work, buy a new thermostat, checking it in boiling water before installing it.

But the thermostat would only affect the temperature on the low end? I replaced it with a new Mopar 203 degree thermostat.

Test the coolant, get a coolants tester cheap, make sure 50/50. Why would coolant be 221? Mine never got past 206f even on hot days. If all is new it is likely air in system or full concentrate coolant.

Almost to the person everyone running a 180 t stat enjoy lower temps. Water wetter too can help lower 7f or so.

It *should* be fully open allowing enough flow to keep things cool, but if it's not opening all the way then it isn't letting things flow correctly, thus the heat build up.

Per Burla, I would suspect air bubbles first.

So my Mechanic did put in full concentrate. Been using him for years so I trust his work but I don’t think he would just fill it up with full concentrate.he has changed coolant on other vehicles with 0 issues. It doesn’t look like thicker concentrate when I open the radiator, it looks thinner like a 50/50 mix.

I’m going to call my guy first thing and see if I can get it to him to bleed the system

You said the coolant looks thinner than a 50/50 mix but also stated your mechanic put full concentrate in when he changed the other components. Full concentrate is fine if you mix at 50/50 distilled water, might save a little money over buying twice as much of the pre-diluted. What thermostat did he remove and what temp and brand thermostat did he reinstall? I have been running a 190 thermostat with the fan temps lowered through a tuner. Truck runs 194 -198. your truck may have air in the system. I find the "air lift" tool works the best for refills. Full concentrate can freeze and possibly not cool as well as 60/40 or 50/50 but I doubt that is the issue here.

He used full concentrate. I was trying to say it looks like a 50/50 mix. He removed the oem thermostat and replaced it with an oem 203 mopar thermostat.

I recently changed my radiator and thermostat in my '15 SLT.

I first tested the new Mopar tstat on the stove and it opened around 206°. It took a good bit to bleed all the air out, I'd run it, then check it cold, and my level was down past the filler neck for at least 5-6 times of this. It only took a few ounces of coolant each time, and then finally, it was full.

My temps run sometimes to 219° - 221°, but they do drop. Seems like I never used to see temps much over 203° when my truck was younger, but after overheating when the radiatior cracked, I now watch my EVIC like a hawk.

I'm gonna put a 190° stat in her before too much longer, I do not like the 220° + temps. When it got to 240°, that freaked me out.

My truck is on the cusp of 200k miles, and I still have the original water pump, AGS, and e-fan, FWIW.

Very similar. Mine has never overheated. I just did a coolant flush and changed thermostat as maintenance. It get to 221-224 now and then it cools down but if I’m driving long highway miles it cycles back up to that temp and cools back down.

So interestingly I have the old thermostat and it says 85c on the side of it but my guy replaced it with a 203 degree thermostat. I’m dropping it back off at my mechanic today. He is gonna check out the current thermostat, fans and radiator.

85°C is equal to 185°F. Interesting.

Right. So now I’m at a loss. I can’t find a 85c thermostat from mopar that fits it and dodge says to run a 203f one.

Look inside the barrel,as it should have it's operating temp stamped there,but it sounds like somebody might have swapped a 180 into it somewhere along the line.
If the old thermostat was operating fine,re-install it,as the thermostats you get these days seem to be hit or miss on whether they're any good.
Ma Mopar has 180's with-in their preformance end of things.The first thing the Hellcat upgrades include is usually a 180 thermostat.If you look for a Hellcat or an 2005 Ram 5.7 thermostat you might have more luck

You likely won't find an OE 185 stat. Used to be, a 195° stat was spec'd in the '04 - '08 ish MY, I believe. I think that the 203° is the spec for all now.

Gates 34059S is a 190° stat, I believe.

Whatever stat you buy, check it on the stove to make sure the temps are accurate, and that it actually works. Lots of Chinesium parts out there.
