I'm curious what you guys think of the adaptive cruise control on the newer trucks?

I just rented a Nissan Maxima that had this and it was pretty nice. I really liked it out on the highway but did find it a bit overzealous as I got into traffic. It seemed to brake and accelerate a lot more harshly than I would and I couldn't imagine using it in traffic but overall it was nice and I could see making sure to get it on a future vehicle.

btw.... the Maxima is one hell of a sedan. Of course, driving a truck makes me forget how nice cars are. It's been 10+ years since I've driven a car with any regularity and they sure have come a long way!

Myself I would not want to buy any vehicle with any driving aids like that.
I dont need adaptive cruise, dont want something backing my truck or parking it.
I dont need blind spot monitoring either..lol

Main reason I bought my Express is it does not have or has less computer control of the truck, and I wish what it has could be taken off.

Lol, you don't even know what your missing then, no blind spot monitoring common...this is so useful, do you not like tire pressure or rear view camera, I'd still get all the tech I could and just not use it in scenarios where they don't call for it

I know how to drive, I dont text and drive so know I do not need or want any of that crap.lol
Tire pressure should be able to be set by the owner and not preset.
Back up camera thats what mirrior s are for.
I am not missing anything ! Plus I did not have to pay extra money for crap that I dont need and is going to break.
I drive a 26' box truck for a living and even with something of that size I still dont need all of that worthless junk. All you have to do is pay attention to what you are doing,.
:) lol

lol if there was no innovation, we would still be in horse and carriage, again you dunno what your missing.... the blind spot indicator is not just for when your changing lanes.... same with tps - guess you never ran over a nail or had a slow leak and you check your tire pressures daily lol, and rear view camera shows way more then what your 3 mirrors can lol, guess you dont like seatbelts or a speedometer or abs or cruise control either

Never said that we dont need or want advancements just dont like how they are forcing them on the public in how they group them in the option packages, its also making the people that use them poor drivers by them thinking they dont need to pay attention to the road and who is around them while they are on it.

Again the tpms should be adjustable per the owner, I also dont need this as I look at my tires before I drive off in my truck Do you not do this? Just blindly jump in and take off?

Again the BS and back up camera is for people that cant drive or just dont care to pay attention when they drive, put your phone down and watch what you are doing..lol

You might want to adjust your mirriors if you cant see out of them what you can see with the back up camera..lol
I have also seen people just back right out of a parking spot using these BUC cameras and allmost get hit in the side as they think they dont need to look anywhere else but at the view screen.

I guess you think I have never used a back up camera or drove in a car with BS notification ? I have so NO I am not missing a ******* thing , its just something that will stop working and is not needed if you know how to drive.

I laugh my ass off every time I see a Ford commercial where the truck backs the boat in the water while the dude just sets in the seat .lol . Or the one that self parks the car.

Driving is like shooting if you dont use it you will loose it.

My wifes Challenger has adaptive cruise and I like it,wished my truck had it. It is a bit aggressive on the brakes, but nothing that isn't livable with.I find it more aggressive the tighter you have the gap set between you and the vehicle ahead,if you set it with the gap maximized it doesn't seem quite as aggressive unless somebody pulls in front of you/basically cutting you off, then it'll brake pretty hard.

Whoa Kemsabe, lol, everybody calm down. Hee Hee. I like the back up camera, but use mirrors too. But ne way, 69 is correct on how FCA bunches stuff together in different option packages. U go to order and want this or that, and get told: U can't have that because This Option Package U ordered deletes that option, etc etc. Back up camera's nice, but even when I hook up my trailer, I always get out and look also, but at times convenient. Since I just have a lil lowly Bighorn, not got all the extra bling like front camera, blind spot, etc., etc,., though as in all things sometimes the bling is nice, but not necessary. Hmmmmmmm, my 1st car was a '65 Buick Special, 4 doors, heater/defroster, AM radio crank all. Only power was steering. Me thinks I still made it OK< bet that ole car still running somewhere. All above IMHO, cause I's just a Boird. :angels25:

I was using it on a pretty desolate road between Las Vegas and Laughlin and was impressed with how far back the highest setting would keep me. I had cruise set at 83 (75mph road) and I was a long way back which was nice since I didn't want to ride the bumper of the guy in front of me.

Something that was really cool was that when I was in the right lane and came up behind someone and it slowed, the instant I put on my left signal to go around it sped up (wonder if it's tied to the turn signal?)

For you tech-phobes out there I get it and agree at times but a lot of the technology is pretty nice. I'm in Vegas for a work conference and one of the speakers was a "geek" talking about all the gadgets and home innovation of things - cameras, wifi thermostats, facial recognition, etc, etc. A lot of the things are totally over the top IMO but it's the way things are going to be in the future. At 47 I'm kind of in the middle of the tech-wave. Kids (20-30) these days are just pre-programmed with all this stuff (scary, I know). 10+ years older than me and you just didn't grow with any of it and I understand the dislike.

Not a dislike, more of kinda: Big Brother in control. Yes, tech is nice but times, U know, just not care. My father used to take Home Movies with a "Super "8" camera mounted on a Straight Line Bar Holder, in the middle, of 6, I say 6 150W spotlights, boy times have changed, LOL.....

U could give a person a Suntan in 5 minutes of using the movie camera, LMAO...:flamingdevil:

We had a saying in the Navy. The smarter the plane, the dumber the pilot. Now people will be paying less attention to the road because they are thinking the car will stop for me. While the tech is great and a huge benefit to those who pay attention it will cause some to have a false sense of security. Those are the ones I'm worried about.

Maybe in a future near you, the all knowing government will REQUIRE all vehicles to have it and use it. Cant shut it off, cant carve some apex turns on a downhill canyon without the brakes self actuating, even with no other cars nearby. Then again you could get in a nap, on your commute, hopefully not the dirt type.

My biggest issue is the distance. I’m one of those people that will get 6 ft from your rear bumper as another car passes us then shoot over 3 ft behind that car, just so I don’t have to turn off my cruise.

My wife’s Highlander has it and even at the lowest setting I feel it slows me down too soon, too far away from the car in front of me.

It is nice though when you go through a speed zone or construction zone. I can leave the cruise set at say 72 and it will keep me the slower speed of the car in front of me. Then when out of the zone speed up as the car in front of me does. Never have to touch the brake or engage cruise again. I do wish I could just cut it off. My wife calls it her own brake pedal. She hates how aggressive I drive.

As for blind spot, super handy. My wife is shorter than I am so with blind spot monitoring I don’t have to adjust her side view mirrors when I drive her car. I can leave them be.

Back up camera is super handy in good situations. Do I rely on it, no. But when there is a pole behind me and all I see is the fence behind the pole in my mirrors, the camera that can see that pole is nice.

All the driver safety aids are a stress-reliever for me. I know how to drive, and I'm always paying attention, but the BLIS catches the speeder that is flying by and thus skipped through my mirrors, the backup camera allows me to see around the van parked at my kids' daycare so I can see oncoming traffic, the adaptive cruise control makes it much less stressful when I don't want to deal with traffic or my ankles/feet/knees are bothering me, the automatic headlights help with my poor night vision. I'll take all that safety stuff and be able to better relax during my commute.

If I want to experience it all or have a fun drive, I'll ride one of my motorcycles.

I for one love the adaptive on my wife's vehicle, wish I had it on mine. all the new fangled stuff is great if it is used as a tool to be a better, more informed driver instead of replacing good driving habits. like a previous poster said, if it weren't for new technology, we would still be driving horse and buggies.

Air conditioning, cruise control (of any kind), power steering, power windows, power locks, power of any kind under the hood, remote start, remote locks, power mirrors, rear defrost, heated mirrors …. on and on ...

These are all "new fangled" crap that my first car didn't have.

It's that "if" part that is a little concerning. I don't have very much faith that a majority of the people will use these as tools to be better drivers, I see most people replacing good driving habits (if they even had them to begin with) with laziness. Hopefully I'm wrong because there's no doubt that this kind of technology isn't going away. I don't personally have a huge problem with it, not something I'm interested in but even if my ram had a few of those features I would just choose not to use them if I didn't like them.

You're right on about the laziness! Technology in todays vehicles are meant to be a tool in helping people drive safer, but instead, people are thinking it is a replacement for driver awareness instead, and just rely on what a little sensor tells them. I personally like my front and rear bumper sensors, and my rear view camera helps with backing up my truck, but I don't have to have those items to drive the thing. I don't think I want blind spot monitoring, or adaptive cruise control, or anything else like that, as I am perfectly able to turn my own head, or just keep an eye on the cars ahead of me. Even the cars that are becoming "self-driving" scares me because I actually enjoy getting behind the wheel. Oh well, you can't stop the future I guess.

Yeah, the backup sensors and camera are pretty nice. I love the camera for when I'm backing into a space so I can put my bumper right on the line without hitting the car parked in the next spot. With these big trucks it's nice to get as far out of the parking lot lane as possible. The cameras are also really nice when you are parked beside a wall or a window-less van. No amount of turning your head and looking around can accomplish what the camera can being mounted on the back of the truck.

Someone mentioned things the government requires? That's backup cameras now. I think it's been a year or two buy they are required on all passenger vehicles.

As I think back to my first vehicle (1967 Ford van) I'm not sure I can nail exactly what the best improvement is. Probably just a better stereo :). Of all the new stuff I suppose the backup camera.

A sad story about backup cameras - about 15 years ago a 6 year old kid in our neighborhood got killed by someone backing over him. There were several witnesses that screamed but were too far away for the driver to hear them. All said the driver was going very slow/cautious and never could have seen the kid. He ran out from behind a bush to grab a ball. My point is to some of you that say you don't need any help. As much as I disagree with big brother government requiring things, I'm okay with something as beneficial as a backup camera.
