I know there are hundreds, if not thousands of threads on here asking about cutouts. But, none that I have found are relevant to what I need to ask.
I have a 6.4 Hemi with a modified 3.5" tailpipe. I am NOT running the stock setup, as I bought my truck used and the previous owner had a hack-job of an exhaust under there. Cut out all that crap and went with a Flowmaster Y-pipe, straight to a series of perforated tube mufflers; one 24" AFE at the Y-pipe, and a 22" Magnaflow at the stock location. Im just a tick louder than stock, with a little rumble at idle to let you know its a big motor under the hood. But, its not a "performance exhaust" type of rumble. More like a stock Charger with a 5.7 or something, and NO drone at all. Call me a "Pawpaw", but I like it like that MOST of the time.
On the other hand I have had a few times I wish it was a little more aggressive, but not all the time. So, I was thinking about adding a cutout between the mufflers just for sh!7$ and giggles. I cant go in front of the first muffler because its welded straight to the Y-pipe, and dont really want to do a striagh-pipe sound anyway. So I am thinking of going into the section between the mufflers. However, a 3.5" guillotine style electric cutout is hard to come by. Im not real crazy about the butterfly type.
So, my question is, if I run smaller diameter pipe branching off the side of my 3.5", it shouldnt hurt any performance, will it? My thinking is that any exhaust gas not released at the cutout will just continue on though the system, but Im afraid that it will cause a problem due to lack of exhaust gas velocity downstream. All I want to do is create some noise without hurting what performance I have. Not really looking to add anything but sound. Hell, its a 3/4 ton, not a race car. Anyone have any input here?
