About a year ago my 2016 Ram started ticking or tapping on cold starts. I took it to the dealer as it was under warranty. They said it sounded fine and they checked the manifold bolts and they were all good. Recently it started getting louder and lasts for almost a minute.

From reading other threads I think it is the manifold bolts but wanted other opinions before I take it in again.

Oh boy ... Hemi tick thread #67

From the little bit that I've looked, I think the number hemi tick threads is probably way higher but I didn't see a general thread to post it in.

Two ram forum fixes for lifter tick are oil thread or additive thread. I bet if you tried them you would have zero change in that, which would prove it somewhat. I would go to exhaust shop and just have them listen and quickly tell you and see what the cost would be.

The dealer said that sounded fine? Deaf and fkin stupid.

I have read a lot of those threads and was going to do an early oil change to redline just to see. I don't think it would make a difference either. I tried a half of a bottle of Liqui Moly Truck Series and put about 1300 miles on and it didn't make a difference.

I'm currently running Mobil 1 oil and filter.

Thanks for the info

I have listened to many of these, I have been wrong from time to time, but I'm almost 100 that is exhaust, which btw is great news when compared. You can do a used oil analysis to check the health of that engine.

I read the post to fast, agree with Burla (hes pretty much the pro on these anyway).. and hes right on it being good news from a cost perspective... but a good opportunity to look at headers [emoji854][emoji846]

My 2016 Ram is doing something similar on startup. It's very random though so it's hard to diagnose. It does go away, I estimate after 30 seconds. Took it to the dealer and they said no manifold bolts were broke. I have ~6,000 miles left on the warranty. I would really like to have it do this consistently and get it taken care of under warranty. I wonder if I let this sit for a few days, if it would make it worse. If that's the case, I'm thinking the oil drains down and it's a lifter tick. Or it's all in my head from reading these lifter tick posts on forums... either way, after 6,000 miles it will do it on every startup I'm sure

Mine started at about 56k miles. I took it in at 59k miles just before my warranty was up but it wasn't as loud as it is now. I'm taking it back to the dealer and see what they say.
I will update the thread when I have more info.

I agree it sounds a lot like exhaust. But dose it also sound like a collapsed lifter kinda?

Was at my dealer for an oil change the other day. My truck has 56K miles on it and has been ticking for several months. Like others, it goes away after a minute or so. While I was waiting for my oil change I asked two service techs (out of ear shot from each other) what they knew about the hemi-tick. Both said nearly the exact same thing; they're 99 percent sure it's exhaust manifold bolts and/or warped header. However, in quizzing them a bit further, I asked how often they see this and how do they remedy the problem so it doesn't happen again. The one tech said they repair about 3 trucks a month with this issue and they keep an extra set of machined headers in stock. He said the passenger side is most common but driver side is also a problem too. Mine is loudest on the driver side. He said they have had to replace the exhaust header (or manifold, I don't know which now) a second time on the same vehicle on a few trucks. So maybe the bolts aren't always broken at first when the warping starts, but the tick does not get better with time. He said he wouldn't go very long without doing the fix for fear of other problems resulting from lack of back pressure, etc. I have the lifetime warranty so the $750 repair cost will only cost be $100. Think I will schedule it next month when I'm not traveling so much. I like my dealer service dept, trust their judgment, because they've been fair and honest with me on other issues so far.

I had 2 manifold bolts broken on each side (2017 5.7 with 44k miles), and that is EXACTLY what it sounded like. I didn't know about the Hemi Tick at that point, and was certain that it was a stuck lifter. Dealer replaced 4 bolts, all under warranty and the sound went away. Interesting because I have had 4 Jeep Grand Cherokees and never had this issue. I thought it was the same engine? Maybe different exhaust manifold?

I bought a 2017 5.7 it now has only 2,477. miles on it. I'm in my senior years. Built engines in my day. If l haven't started it in a week or two sometimes not always, l start it up and it starts tapping as in lifter. Oil pressure is up where it belongs, it lasts for 15 to 20 seconds since new. I took it back to the dealer. They told me it didn't happen for them? It needs to be inspected for Pa. inspection. I started it and it was tapping loud for over 5 minutes. I even tap the gas pedal, but it would not stop. I drove down the street, l was embarrassed to hear it, reverberating off other cars. It finally went away. It has to be a lifter, because it doesn't always happen! They want me to leave it. ? If you start it every day it normally won't happen. I told them it's a lift that when you shut the motor off, and that valve lifter is under pressure is when it happens. They look at you like your stupid, no answer just crickets .

You have to accept what is, fca will never fix hemi tick from a noise, when you get a mis fire then they will warranty you if you have any left or corn hole your pocket book if you don't. I invite you to take part in the lubrication threads, look at the polls. I think without a doubt trucks that sit like this will tick, even mine that is tick free unless it sits for two weeks plus. Literally most guys that try these fix their tick with lubrication if you believe poll results.

My 14 1500 started the tick in mornings for about a minute or two until I put a bottle of Liqui Moly additive in it. It seemed to quiet it down the next morning. No tick tick tick!!!!

Agree with others, It for sure sounds like you have broken manifold studs, it quieted down when it warmed up, Just wiggle the heat shields they usually break on both ends, the ones on your drivers side sound worst, take Burla's advice and read his Oil and Filter Thread you may save the ship!!

Dealer said the rear 2 manifold studs were broke on the passenger side. They are trying to claim they weren't broke when I brought it in previously so they won't cover it. $572.

No thanks, I will do it myself
