I did not read all the previous replies on page two.

However if you set the backlash wrong it will break and in the worst way.
Do not do this unless you are stranded and need to make it into town for a proper repair.


I've done this (because at times I am lazy) in the test drive around the block it messed up all those bearings and tore apart.

You may get lucky, but I didn't. ended up swapping axles with a parts truck.

A 3.92 around here is impossible to find. I have been searching for 2 months now. I have snagged a dial indicator and magnetic base and a clutch pack x2 as well as carrier bearings and races.

I have a set of spiders from another lower km 3.55 rear when I am going to use.

The diff has been cleaned up and today I am putting the clutch packs and spiders back in and pressing the new bearings on.

Tomorrow will be putting the diff back in the housing and then when the bearing race adjuster tool gets here I'll be doing the backlash and carrier bearing pre loads.

Is this differential too far gone to be used? I have 3 from 3 different years and they all look like this. This one came from a truck with 125xxx kms on it. The other 2 look the same and are from 235xxxkm and 387xxx kms. This is the only diff that has the 3.92 ring gear though so it's the one I have to use.
