The camera on my 2018 2500 ctd is not centered in the tailgate handle, it’s off to the drivers side. I noticed new ones, or maybe the 1500s are. Has anyone swapped, or know if I can swap mine for one with the camera centered in the tailgate handle? Would make it much more useful when hooking up trailers.

Can’t be done. The tailgate handle on the 2019s are a completely different shape, and the connectors for the camera are different.

That doesn’t make it impossible, just prohibitively expensive. With enough money, anything is possible. It it worth it for a camera? Probably not.

I do wonder if you could just swap tailgates…

Ok, I’ll answer more carefully this time. Yes, you can fit a tailgate from a 2019 2500/3500 (not a 5th gen 1500 because it’s taller) onto a 4th gen ram. Then, to get the rear camera to work, you’ll have to use a radio from a 2019 5th gen 1500 or a 2019 2500/3500, but you’ll lose your steering wheel controls and voice recognition with the new radio. So, yes, for about two to three grand, you can get a rear view camera that is centered.

I don’t want this to sound ****** but I have the same truck, same cam and I hit the hitch every time. I can’t even tell on the screen that it’s off center. Since the cam is off center like 1.5” and the hitch is about 4’ from the cam, I doubt you would see any difference with it centered.

My camera is dead on for hooking up trailers. They’re adjusted to the center of the bumper.

Do you have the guidelines turned on?

I too have no issue hitting the ball, just think it’s lame for it not to be centered. If it’s fine the way ours is, why did they change it and other trucks have theirs centered? Look again when you hook up, very obvious it’s off center. I guess I expect more from a $70k+ rig.

I have a 18 Laramie and I as well as the many have no issues hocking up. Bit I was behind an 5th gen and I was looking at the the camera in the in the middle of the handle on the tailgate and well I don’t know how the pence exposed like that would last as well as dirt build up.

I noticed when I first got it, but as soon as you’re only focused on the hitch and ball it doesn’t really matter.

I had read somewhere that the camera is calibrated to the hitch, and the slight offset is adjusted for.

A trick I learned was that the two screws holding the inner tailgate panel on are centered to the hitch. If there's an equally centered screw or if you put a dot or sticker on that spot on your trailer, you'll have an easier time lining it up even without the camera.

The biggest issue is tire size. The larger the tire, the more distance it travels per revolution, (or 1/16 revolution) and if you oversteer, it's easier to overshoot your mark before you realize you've moved.

Practice helps. And remember, no one is grading you, except your neighbor, but no one likes him anyway. LOL.

Lol I don’t miss the screaming wife camera or the made up hand gestures that usually ended with the bird! Now I have a backup cam and no wife, life is good!
