Bigger fuel tank options?

Love my '18 power wagon. It's a tank and gets tank like MPG. That in of itself doesn't bother me. But with a 31 gal tank @10mpg, that's ~300 miles range. Not an issue when there is a gas station all around, but on long trips off-roading, where it can get down to 3mpg, I do get some range anxiety.

Short of jerry can's or rotopax's, are there any auxiliary fuel tank options?

I’ve looked into this for mine, and I think I’m going to pull the trigger soon.

Check out a titan tanks. They say it’s diesel only, but the factory part numbers for Gas or Diesel are exactly the same, so I’m thinking there is no difference. And 50 gallons is way better than 31.

Might have to call them and see if their mega cab one will fit a crew cab short bed. Hoping it will.

I will be interested in that avenue for sure. An aux tank would be good, too, but everything is diesel only.

So ram can make one tank out of the same material that is used in both gas and diesel trucks but Titan cannot make a tank made out of the same material for both?

Most tanks rated for gasoline can be used for diesel but not the other way around. Also if you go the auxiliary tank route, gasoline can not be gravity feed. You must use a top mounted siphon pump.

I look into the bed mounted aux tank (to use to refuel a car at the track) a while back.

Basically DOT has a bunch of rules for transporting hazardous materials. Diesel and gas are both class 3 but gas requires a type II packing group.

Tanks and pumps DOT approved for highway transportation of gasoline get expensive fast.

I ended up giving up on the idea and just stuck with the 5 gal gas cans.

I’d also like to know how an aftermarket tank made out of the exact same material as my OEM tank cannot hold gasoline.

I still disagree sir. Why can it not be gravity fed. I am interested in an educational dialog - I am not trying to start a fight/****** match. : )

I'm no expert but after looking for days that's the conclusion I came to. All gravity fed systems were only rated for diesel.

These guys don't recommend gravity fed even for diesel.

Gas builds pressure and then becomes more like a bomb because of the pressure. If ya tried to vent it then your surrounded with gas fumes. The only way that this could be done safely is an L shaped tank tied directly to the factory tank. For ventilation purpose.

You will have to call the manufacture of the tank to find out why they didn't apply for a permit to manufacture tanks approved for gasoline.

Or if you have nothing better to do, you can drill down thru 49 CFR part 178 and try to figure it out.

Actually that is for packaging of fuel as in like a tank truck for your local gas station. I believe I may have found what we are looking for:

49 CFR 393.65

(d) Gravity or syphon feed prohibited. A fuel system must not supply fuel by gravity or syphon feed directly to the carburetor or injector.

So by this definition, I interpret it that if you were to supply from your axillary tank into your primary tank this would be perfectly legal; as your primary tank supplies to the injector by this definition. Obviously you would need a valve to prevent over filling the primary tank.
