Here's a picture of the 1500's 8 speed, the vent tube is basically at the very front of the transmission, just behind the convertor, and it's located at roughly the highest point of the transmissions working internals, disregarding where the convertor is located. The smaller tube with the smaller red cap is the vent tube, which has a hose on it a couple feet long, that locates the actual end of the breather tube up into the engine bay. It'd virtually be impossible to fill the transmission to the point it would spit transmission fluid into the engine bay beside the intake manifold.
The other tubes with the red caps are the for the coolant hoses feeding the thermal management unit aka heater, and the back 2 which are a bit smaller then the coolant transfer tubes, feed the lines to the transmission cooler located in the top part of the A/C condensor

Here's a couple pic's showing how the fluid is routed to the cooler, and a pic of the thermal management unit.
The rubber encased tubes are the transfer tubes, that route fluid from the transmission, through the hokay thermostat unit. The first and last pic are where Caulk04's thermostat bypass is located.
If you take a wander through this thread, you'll see how Khris and i deleted the thermal management unit, this was before Jesse had come out with his thermostat bypass, which is a far better approach to bringing the 8 speeds temps down.

What a mess - just to have better oil temp control.

Thanks for the pics.
Especially when you consider the cars and HD trucks with the 8 speed don't use the coolant heater, just the 1500's use it.
Both the cars and HD's do use a thermostat, but it's a seperate stand alone thermostat divorced from the transmission.
The HD's thermostat also seems to be a lower temp,as most HD trucks with the 8 speed cruise down the road in the lower 160's unloaded and will tow in the upper 160's,a hell'va lot lower then the 185+ the 1500's run at.

Seems they've gone in the opposite direction of standardization and modular design, having too many design variations of dubious application benefits for the sales volumes.

In my later years in product and project management we spent quite a bit of time on product rationalization. Generally, if both sides (sales and manufacturing) were pissed off, we had hit the right balance point! Serious!
