Ok, lifters are in and torqued. Block surfaces are clean. Heads can go on tomorrow morning.

Do I need to push each lifter forward in the tray so that it's roller can contact the corresponding cam lobe?

I figure it will happen anyway once the pushrods are in and the rocker arms are torqued down, but wasnt sure if I should do it before installing the heads, to remove the play.

Looking to see what the FSM has to say.
When you push the pushrods into them, they'll all seat on the cam Ed. Pay real close attention to getting the pushrods into the lifter cups,a good flashlight or trouble light helps, they can be a bit of a pain getting into place. If you can get one rear bolt into the rocker shaft a couple of turns (loose enough you can still tilt the shaft up slightly, but it holds the shaft from slipping out of place),it free's up one hand to align the pushrods with the rocker cups. I like to rotate the crank bolt about 8 turns when i get 1 set of shafts in place, and then i do the same when i get the other set of rocker shafts on the other bank in place. It might be a bit a-n-a-l ,but if anythings binding,i know which side it is,by doing each side individually, having another set of eyes watching the rocker shafts movements while you're leaning on the crank bolt with a breaker bar sure doesn't hurt ;)

Great tip. Common sense is so rare these days.

PS: I have always used a small dab of grease on the pushrod end that hits lifter. Kinda glues it there a little. Have done that and pulled out the push rod, and it took the lifter out with it.

Stupid question #432:

Set the driver side head in place, grabbed some head bolts, and noticed:

My bolts came in separate shipments, one was a partial bulk bag, and the bolts in that bag look oily to me. Not heavy oily, and they do not stink like the ones I pulled out did, but different than the single bagged ones I got.

Bulk bag, oily-looking on right.

I think I'm ok with them, just wanted some opinions.

I will use those on the passenger side, just in case.....lol

Thoughts?

They should all have a light coat of oil on them,if they're really oily you could lightly wipe them down.Check the tops of them over close to make sure they haven't had a socket on them, wouldn't be the first time i've seen used bolts called new,and shipped out to another customer.

I didn't see any evidence of a socket being used on them. They damn sure didn't stink like the originals I pulled out of the heads...lol.

I sprayed them with some brakleen and gave them a little oil on a few threads at the end.

I used those 5 bolts on the passenger side head alternating. I was able to torque and angle them all, fingers crossed.

Ready to torque down the driver's side head.

Driver side rear head bolts were pain-in-the-balls to get 90° on.

I need a cocktail.....lol

Did the 2 oddball bolts look like they'd ever had a socket on them Ed?

No, there were 5 in that bulk bag. None had any socket marks that I could tell, and they all went on passenger side head, all went to torque and angle as well.

Those 2 in the back were a b-itch to get turned to 90° hope I got them close enough. I had to pretty much go by eye on the angle. Tried to line up the ratchet with the head mostly.

I'm either getting weak or it was just a bad angle trying to turn them.

There was a big ole snipe on the end of the ratchet......me!

Really no room to get anything in there for the problem bolts due to the a/c lines, steering shaft, etc.

So, you rotate the crank several times after each set of 4 pushrods?

Do you install exhaust rockers and pushrods first?

I hope the spark plug holes are enough to draw air into the cylinders, I have painters tape over my intake and exhaust ports.

After both rocker shafts are on each bank, but you could rotate it over after each rocker shaft is installed,it's actually not a bad idea, but you might want to find a muscle bound kid to rotate the engine over that many times,as you'll be sweating, :Big Laugh: .Open plug holes allow lots of air into and out of the cylinders, lol

I cleaned out some stuff in my front room closet and came across the Pulsar that I tried out on my 2017 HEMI RAM. I used it for about a year and took it off, wasn't what I expected ...

Ed, do you want it to try it out, it's for 2015-18 5.7 HEMI/with the ZF8 Speed?

What the hell, that thing is $749.95 @ American trucks. com ... I didn't give that for it when I purchased it back in 2018 ...

Hey, Rick, remember when I said I misplaced my old timing chain?

I also realized yesterday that I misplaced the original head bolts, too.

That rubber room is closer and closer to becoming a reality........lol.
