I know it bugs the crap out of my brother in law when someone calls his GMC a Chevy........so of course, I have to!

I don’t either, fully. It sounds like it was so that the Dodge brand and the Ram brand could be focused on individually.
Sounds like it was Fiat that did it, tho.

When damper split from Chrysler, Chrysler wasn't sure it could survive and split brands so they could be sold off.
In 1998, Chrysler merged with German automaker Daimler-Benz AG to form DaimlerChrysler; the merger proved contentious with investors. As a result, Chrysler was sold to Cerberus Capital Management and renamed Chrysler LLC in 2007.

Ram name is dumb. What do we have? a Ram Ram. Will always be a Dodge to me with Ram being the model. Even my 2005 Hemi Ram said Dodge nowhere on it.
A friend bought a new GMC and argued with me on how different everything was between a Chevy and GMC pickup.(drivetrain, suspension etc.) I finally told him the only difference was he could spell GMC.
