I recieved a drag link recall on my 2017 pw.
They talk about checking torque on the drag link nut and welding it .
If it doesn't meet the torque requirements you get a new drag link.
Has anyone delt with this problem yet?
Wouldn't welding the nut weaken the link ?
What would be a reason to remove and reuse the drag link?
If its welded once removed you could not reuse.

My ‘18 goes in at 1pm today!

I want to start building a relationship with the servicing dealership! I’d like to get to know the manager and mechanics that will be taking care of things I can’t!

I’ll let you know what they feel about these trucks and their capabilities, weakness, strengths, etc!

Great day to y’all!

Udy!

There is a thread about this already. Seems like some guys have had the dealership weld the lock nuts. No reviews yet it seems.

Dont think i will be having this done though. My linkage is marked and i plan to install a quick fix instead of a dealer welding them in a fixed position.

Great experience at https://www.friendlydodgechryslerjeep.com/!

Drag link was perfect! Tack welded! All good!

While there, they replaced the roof clearance lights! They noticed condensation in one of them! No charge...TSB! AWESOME!

The condensation was noticed when they were doing a complimentary wash of my truck!

I was invited into the shop so they could show me what they found!

All fluids were checked! They complimented me on the Amsoil filter and neat clean job of oil change!

I think I found my dealer of choice!

Excellent, above and beyond, facility!

Why did they weld it if it was perfect?

When you searched where did you enter “drag link recall”?

Took me a long time to figure out that the field you enter your search into is in the word “search...”

Why did they weld it if it was perfect?

There is the possibility that the opposing forces, created by steering back and forth, could loosen, and even pull apart, the drag link!

why not use a jam nut. Holds all the antennas together I've ever built even with high winds and vibrations.

I get that. You said it “was perfect”. does this mean it was in spec for torque and they welded it anyway? I thought the recall called for welding only if it didnt meet the torque specs. Just wondering if they welded it for no reason

2018, 7800 miles, got recall yesterday, checked it this morning, one of the nuts was already loose. They use a jam nut set up but, only 1 nut on each side of sleeve. IMHO, the contact area on the sleeve for nut to tighten to, is way smaller than nut contact area itself, not a good match up for locking to each other.

A jam nut would be another nut on each side (total of 4). Which would be a much better fix (if there is even an issue with the current setup) then welding imo.

I honestly dont understand the issue here. If the nuts are properly tightened to the adjuster collar what is the issue? Mine have been fine, and I have made several adjustments over the years.

I think the main issue is the factory never got them properly secured from the get-go.

Either way, think I’ll do the suggested red lckte 1 nut at a time, then put an eyeball on em each time I refill the DEF. So in brief, y’all watch ur own nuts, heheh. Njoy the ride.

I just called my dealer about this recall for my '18 PW, asked him if there is a fix other than welding...he said "not at this time". So I said, well, if you weld this and then I need an alignment what are you going to do? He says "break the weld, adjust it and re-weld it". I said...what is the permanent fix? Chrysler needs to send us parts for a permanent fix...they don't know when that will be.
So, guess I won't have this looked at till I go down there for an oil change...I don't think I'd want them "fixing" this right now....just saying. Unfortunately, I'm not a mechanic, I don't know what to look at or what to look for....but I didn't pay this much money for a vehicle to just slap on a temporary fix. Unless it is "just that"...temporary with an estimated time for the permanent fix!
Does anyone have any idea how long Chrysler usually takes to provide parts for a fix like this? Just curious.
Thanks!
Mazer

Yup, all in spec! Tacked the nuts in place,

I’ll take some pics of welds when I’m home...still fixing furnaces! I got 3” of snow last night, temps in the low 20s at my house over night!!

I was at the dealer 15 min early! All bays were full! I was out of there in hour and a half! Recall done, cab lights done, wash of truck done! Very happy with the service of the dealership!

I do wheel it! Lots of seasonal roads, lots of mud, trails through woods, some rocks(not real rock-crawling)! In my eyes, better safe than sorry!

I’m very happy to go a little overboard with steering and front suspension!

My last 2 K5s were Kingpin Dana 60s with crossover steering!

The recall says, they will check the torque on the jam nuts, if they are in spec then they weld them in place. If the nuts are loose then they replace the drag link but those parts ore not available yet. I will not let my dealer weld those nuts that is a terrible “fix”

I agree, when I installed my lift they were just barely tightened, the weight of the wrench alone spun the nut. I simply used blue loctite and torqued them down. 15k miles ago and all good.
