I know this have been talked about over and over but i'm really having a hard time deciding.

My warrenty now over, I want to do my own oil change, and debating between the 5w20 or 5w30. Also in a perfect world I woul like to run Redline oil, but beeing in Canada, it is really expensif for me to get. I'm debating between Mobil 1 and Penzoil Platinum witch I can get at good price.

So Mobil 1 or PP and 5w20 or 5w30

Endless threads on this. My advice is just read them, then make YOUR decision, stick with it, and move on to more important issues to worry about.

I put Mobil 1 5w20 in my Pentastar with a Mopar filter cartridge purchased at Walmart, and plan to stick to that. If I spent endless hours fretting over other brands and filters, and cowering to other folks opinions, would the engine really care, or would the oil/filter marketers be happier?

Plus, then you'd have more time to fret about whether to add a catch can or not, and which one...

From everything I have seen, both those oils do well. I use PP cause that is what I like & what FCA calls for on the 6.4. What weight oil does your manual call for? Seems like most guys on here are going with the heavier weight oil. I might would us the 5w20 in winter & 5w30 in the summer. Just as important, filters. I have seen bad things on the Mopar Oil Filters. Unless you go with the SRT part number. I personally use either Wix XP or Fram Synthetic.

These are the top two oils of the forum, used by ram forum members. But, m1 0w30 is a very good formula, so if you choose 0w30 I would go m1, if not I'd go Pennzoil synthetics. M1 uses different base oils as they go after euro specs, stuff like Porsche and Mercedes.

Depends on the brand, so one way to get the 0 rating is to add pao, and one way would be to add vii's, so stay in grade specs hint that considerable amount of pao is used in some 0 winter rated oils, especially various m1 offerings. So bottom line, some 0w30's only carry an upside, because most of the 5 winter rated oils don't bother with stay in grade specing, or when they do it is easy to stay in grade because of the swing between winter rating and weight. In cold places 0w30 will flow much better than 5w30 at start up, but flow the same at operating temp, look up cSt's of both oils you will see.

Look at chart, pao second line, that base oil doesn't need gimmicks in the base oil to flow in the cold, and has better heat properties as well. So less vii's, less pour point depressants needed because they naturally flow in colder temps. Only downside is cost.

You see mineral oils can operate at low temp, but another fact is these oils will flow thinner at cold temps, which doesnt mean it flows thin, even when they are cold they are thick, just less thick then mineral.

Everything you add to a base oil is temporary and wont lubricate as good as the base oil as the oil is in use. PAO is a base oil that takes less additives to meet specs, so it will be stable in your sump, thus stay in grade specs are met. People often feel they are only given something up by using 0 winter rated oils, sometimes this is true, but many times it surely isn't. Depends on the specs.

Basically the smaller the first number and the bigger the second number the wider temperature range you get. For people living in the prairies or way North where the temp gets to -40 just about every winter...they should be considering a 0W20 or 0W30, the reason why everybody doesn't use it is the price...and they never go on sale. I'm pretty sure NB has pretty mild winters (please correct me if i'm wrong) and if that's the case, 5W20 is fine. Redline is ****** expensive in Canada but M1 5W20 synthetic goes for $25/jug at Canadian Tire when it's on sale. I use the CT mastercard to collect points every time I fill up and I haven't paid for an oil change in 7 years. Whatever you go with, pick a quality brand and stick with it.

Next winter I'm going to try PUP 0-20 for the winter months in NJ. Have a little piston slap when cold with 5-20. Also use bio lube and change every 4,000 miles. Just got my Blackstone Labs kit and will soon be sending in an oil sample. Have 104,000 miles om my 2011 hemi Ram and only repair was wheel speed censor. Also mix 5-20 and 5-30 in summer months.

If Quaker Sate Ultimate Durability (QSDU) Full Synthetic is available in Canada i would go with that; it has respectable Moly numbers and seems to perform very good.
It being 10 degrees Fahrenheit with -2F wind chill this morning in NB Canada i would run a 20 weight in the winters and a 30 weight in the summers.

There are folks getting great results from Redline, and cost aside I'm not sure anything is better. Otherwise, if you're looking for something reasonably affordable that also has good results and don't want to give it a second thought, PUP is probably the best bet for the average person. I just recently switched from Amsoil 0w40 to PUP 0w40 in my 6.4. I have noticed absolutely no negative effect so far except the PUP was half the cost on sale at NAPA. Next step is to compare UOA.

I use whatever the heck they use at the oil change place. For me there are more important things to worry about. Different places use different color rags to clean up afterwards. I'm sure there are high-tech microfiber cloths they could use instead of cheap shop rags. Maybe I should worry about that too.

Pick something, stick with it, and move on. Your choice of oil is far less important than you think it is.

I would skip the Platinum and go to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. It goes on sale at Canadian Tire all the time. Whenever I am there I check to see if it is on sale whether I need it or not. Quaker State Ultimate Durability is also on sale often. They also throw the Fram Ultra XG2 oil filters on sale here and there.

I run 5 PUP 5W30 and 2 PUP 0W40 year round. If you park outside in sub zero temps you may want to run a 0W30 as suggested but that is your call.
