Get a mechanics stethoscope ($5.00 harbor freight) and pinpoint where the tick is coming from.I also had this concern a while back and it turned out to be my fuel injectors.A bottle of redline fuel treatment quieted them right up.
How would you know if it was fuel injectors I thought maybe that was my issue a while back. But I think was battery going. Originally it didn’t help and still had hesitation on startup but think battery needed to be boosted back up with alternator. It wouldn’t hurt anything to try this right?

No, unless the leak is large. More exhaust gas under load and rpm.

Sure - the head gasket could fail, or the manifold warp so badly it no longer seals.
Well that’s good news lol. Have you personally heard of a case where the leak gets louder as the truck warms up? Also, is it still possible for it to have a leak at the manifold even if all the studs

So if it’s unlikely for it to leak when it’s warm based on your opinion what do you think the tick could be coming from?

I didn't say it was likely or unlikely - it depends how significant the leak is. If the leak is minor, the heating of the mating parts will cause them to close up. If the leak is large, it won't close up.

It’s hard to tell how it sounds but that sounds slightly more metallic than mine if that makes sense. I’ll try to get a video and post it.

Also, if I had a bad lifter would i notice some kind of power loss? Like I said mine still has a ton of power. Just towed a 7000lb trailer today and it help top gear going with no problem.

Yes a lifter will be more metallic. I never lost power, but again I made that clip and went straight to the dealer. If I were you I'd just start putting the redline 5W20 and the royal purple filter and I change mine every 3k miles. Haven't had any more problems and I just hit 200k miles.

So listened closer to the engine at a cold start and I’m pretty sure I hear an exhaust leak, I have a louder exhaust so that kinda muffled any noise upfront until I listened closer. My guess is that it has a larger exhaust leak to begin with then as it warms up the gap closes slightly at you mentioned and that’s when the tick begins. All the studs are still there so I’m going to try replacing the gasket on the drivers side as that’s where I hear the ticking and if I still have an issue replace the whole manifold incase it’s warped.

After I got the cam and lifters done I took and had a set of JBA exhaust headers and new gaskets put on. I had 3 broken studs also, so they had to remove those as well.

How much did labor run you to have a shop do the exhaust gaskets?

I pd them 300 to remove the old headers/ remove the broke studs and install all new parts. So you should get away cheaper if your just replacing the gaskets with no broke studs.

That does sound awful. Was the tick rhythmic? The video sounds like it was somewhat random, rather than synced with RPMs. Or was that because of multiple failed lifters? I'm just asking because my '12 has a tick (doesn't sound as metallic) but very rhythmic, so I'm just curious if that matters at all.

Mine sounds like it *may* have an exhaust leak when it first starts as well, and like yours, my '12 also ticks more as it warms up fully. Have you had a chance to get a video of your tick yet? I also don't have any indication of misfire, lost power, no CEL, etc. Just under 130K miles on mine.

That was at idle. It just got quicker when I drove to the dealer.

Here’s a video of mine after about a 20min drive and up to operating temp. I tightened the manifold bolts on the drivers side a little bit a few days ago and I’m 90% sure it quieted the tick down some.

How long has yours been ticking for?

Mine actually sounds quite a bit like yours. And I bought it used around 128K miles in early October. It's ticked since I bought it. I work remotely and rarely have to drive anywhere, only put about 5K-6K miles per year on whatever my daily driver is (the truck at the moment).

Here's a video of mine, also at full operating temp. https://youtube.com/shorts/RTZbypm0jPc?feature=share

Alright well I’m going to change the manifold gaskets and possibly the manifold itself if it’s warped whenever I have the chance and see if that helps any. I’ll keep you updated since it sounds like we’re having the same issue.
