Well I guess circumstances decided my exhaust situation today as I found a really good deal on a 1 yr old Hellwig sway bar! On the truck & did some twisty turneys & fast on and off ramps. In heavy rain! Love it. Used the middle notches.

Just got an 18"mf for my 6.4l powerwagon. Not sure how bad your drone is but mine is like hitting the bumps at the side of the road to let you know your drifting. But it's all mds kicking in, so I put it in tow mode to keep all 8 cylinders firing

Great upgrade. I've had one on my truck for a year or so and noticed a big improvement.

Back to the drone issue. I believe I read a few threads here where guys with your muffler cleared up drone by actually removing the two stock resonators on the rear. Not sure why this works, but I've seen it posted several times. Might want to give it a try. If it makes it worse, you can always reinstall them.

Adter selecting drive place manual shift to 8th gear. It makes a noticeable difference.

I started with a Carven Progressive. Major drone @ 55-65mph. I researched every option seen here. I just couldn't justify sinking big money back into the exhaust, but the drone had to go.

I switched out the Progressive for a Borla XS Sportsman. I also had it welded in proper. No matter how I tried there was always some tiny exhaust leaks with those damn DIY clamps. Now the drone is so slight any music will take it out. But, when I stomp on the pedal the Borla roars.

$130 for the Borla and $65 for the install. Well worth it.

I find it interesting the steps that are taken to remedy this issue. Many of the posts here have some really strange contraptions and mods to fight unwanted noise.

Modern truck/auto makers use the radio system these days to reduce in cabin drone noises with audio feedback. Too bad that can't be easily done with aftermarket exhaust systems. But because of that, I'll stick to OEM parts. RAM offers an add on muffler system for a better sound, and supposedly more performance. I'd assume the radio fix would also work with that addon. Might be wrong though.

I think a lot of you have spent so much that you could have just bought corsa and been done with it. The drone is near stock. Otherwise leave it stock and/or put shorty headers on it. Stock still sounded nice in my opinion.

I like a slight bit of drone, so I went with the aero exhaust.

I like to build my own because I'm Not a huge fan of generic sounding exhausts. I like being the only guy in town with that sound. Sometimes that makes me too identifyable tho lol

On my '16 1500 I put on an 18" Maggie and it was fun and sounded great. For a couple days. When towing my camper it was horribly obnoxious unless I downshifted over 3k rpm's. I added a resonator and it calmed it down, just like it did for you, but it still had a little bite. I also researched the J-pipe but it has to be specific to the vehicle, so make sure you don't just have someone tack a J into your exhaust. Search for 5.7 Ram J-pipe and you should see Mufflex makes one, but they call it a drone suppression pipe.
I've also heard that running a full exhaust system rather than a drop-in solves the drone but costs a lot more cash- specifically the Corsa.

Very simple and cheap! I replaced my huge restrictive muffler with a walker resonator and short piece of pipe a couple years ago. cost about a $100.00 in total, sounds like an old school glasspak with no drone!. So what I ended up with is the factory resonator, the walker resonator, great sound and no drone! I posted pics a few years ago and sti;ll love the sound. try it , you will be amazed!

I've pulled thousands of miles with the Maggie (Magnaflow) and I an added resonator because it was just too much noise and drone. Part of the problem, in my opinion, is the dual exhaust exits directly out the back, so exhaust is sent into the front of the camper, so it's pretty loud. I suspect it would be a little better on a side exhaust exit but can't confirm. I think my last setup was a bit better at defeating drone than you'll get with the 24" Maggie; it wasn't bad, but I found that while towing on relatively flat terrain, it's a bit much. When the truck downshifts over 2500 rpm's it's very mellow.

For a lot of towing, I wouldn't do it. I'd like a little deeper rumble with my 6.4 occasionally, but the noise while towing and plowing would drive me crazy, especially with our day-long towing trips. For reference, I've driven to Florida, Colorado, Quebec, and New England states with my last truck and sitting for hours listening to the exhaust is a bit much. We have a 4,000 mile trip coming up in July and I'm very happy to have the stock exhaust on my 6.4.

Maybe get a cutout for when you need a bit of noise

After having an MagnaFlow 22" muffler that I loved the tone of but hated the 1500-2000 rpm drone level for the past year, I decided before my long road trip this summer to try to tackle it. I asked for recommendation from the installer and he advised to put a resonator in front of the muffler (well the service adviser did after talking to the owner of the shop). It was going to be about another 300 canadian inc install on top of I'm pretty sure about the same money I spent last year, but if it got rid of that damn drone while keeping most of the tone I loved with the MF, then great. When I brought the truck in to get it done this morning, I spoke with the owners son (who now owns the sharp. young guy but he's sharp, I think) and he said before we do this to be clear, it will help, but not eliminate it. Which gave me pause on moving forward. But I was there & had high hopes it would drop the level...a lot.

So he did the install and I could hear him fire up the truck from the shop so at least I thought, it still has an exhaust note! When I drove it away, I did notice the tone had changed, smoother, less rumbly but close to same volume. I hit the highway and put the truck in the drone zone. It was about 15 minutes on the highway home at steady speeds to evaluate. No doubt not as obnoxious. One of the my observations is the drone level is now competing with the road noise level. When I got to the turn off the highway to the access road and dropped it out of cruise, it still gave me that sense of relief. I equate it to when your ears pop after being plugged sort of thing.

The owner had said they will follow up and if I'm not happy with it they will try to make it right, but I can't see what else can be done (he did say could try a different muffler. sure I have one sitting in my garage from when it was stock but the compromise is no tone!!!!)

As he didn't suggest any other options at that point, I don't know what else he could try. I am not prepared to sacrifice any more character to the sound.

In hindsight, last year I would have bought the Solo Mach 44 muffler but it seemed like an expensive option. Certainly, there had to be more no drone options available (I've since read about possibly a few others here. Borla, expensive and conflicting reports on drone. Corsa which I read for sure is no drone but sounds like a sports car. Not the sound I want from my truck. I went with the MF 22" here in the first place based on many reports it has no drone. I won't go into that debate again. All I will say is in my case, definitely a drone. My truck is a crew cab 1500 btw and I have read some reports they present more of a challenge.


At this point, I will give feedback to the shop and see what they say. If it means ******* away more money for a possible solution...at this point, I'll pass. I don't blame the shop. They were accurate I think in their assessment of what the resonator would do. Failing that, I'll probably see if I can wait until next year and buy a Solo Mach 44 at that point. I just can't dump a new resonator and 1 year old Magnaflow muffler. (I could put them up for sale but you get dirt for that stuff around here anyway)

Any thoughts otherwise? Anything that might help me in discussion with the installer on options?


Meanwhile, I'm going to soak my sorrow into some good news today. Received my Tuftruck 1223vt coils first thing this morning! Stoked to get them, stoke to have a project to work on today. Being laid off when you like to work sucks.

Is the drone your talking about at cruising speed the MDS kicking in and out? When you go from eight to four and back it sounds like crap?

So this thread got me thinking about resonance and cause & effect. I put the Borla ProXS on mine sometime back and while many stated no drone with it, I have it and it's annoying. It's not MDS going in/out, it's definitely drone. It's worse on startup but settles down slightly once warm. I'm mostly deaf in one ear and have tinnitus and it can be extremely annoying in the bad ear.

The OP's post got me thinking about resonance and how different materials affect the tone and pitch. After seeing the OP's solution I thought about header wrap, it has exactly the same affect on headers once wrapped, it changes the tone and pitch experienced. I ordered a a 2"x50' roll on Amazon with stainless ties for $17 and i'm going to double layer wrap the pipe from hanger under the cab all the way to the muffler. Theoretically that should change the frequency as the resonance will change. We'll see but for $17 and an hours time it's worth trying it. If it then i'm putting on the Mufflex Drone Suppression pipe and be done with it.

It wasn't me Buddy. I can't wrap that much up on my system it'd be rusted out in a week [emoji17] goda love the high amounts of calcium they put on the roads in the winter and slather the backroads with it in the summer.
