I've had my 06 SLT Sport 5.9 since new and now I'm ******* after a new truck. The'06 has been great but I'm about to turn 62 and thinking about retirement. Thought I'd get a new truck and get in paid for before I retire. I don't really tow anything heavy but I do have a Bigfoot cab over camper. I'm looking at a 2017 SLT with a 6.4 in a Sport Appearnce group. The 06 has less than 110k on it and it's in great shape. What's the fatal flaw in my thinking?

Nothing really. The 6.4 in the 2500 will provide you with more payload per trim level than the CTD. For a cab over thats a great setup. Word of advice though- 4.10s. That's the only thing I would like a do-over on.

The 4.10's give you an extra 3000 lbs of tow rating plus they are better with the wide gap between 1st-2nd on the transmission , by keeping the rpm's up and staying in the 6.4 power band better. Max torque is made at 4K rpm and the 4.10's help keep it there better when towing. I have the 4.10's and it tows my 8-9000lb travel trailer pretty well here in the mountains of WV.

I love my truck and the 6.4 is a good compromise if you don't want to go diesel. I love diesels, but don't tow often enough to justify the cost.

In my opinion that is a mistake. You're going to lose a lot of fuel mileage and torque. How many miles are on the 06? The plus side is the private sale market for those Cummins trucks is really high. If it's in good shape you'll get at least $25K out of it.

imho, the 5.9 cummins was the best engine ever made. very simple engine compared to days gasser and diesels. any repairs that come along may be expensive, but cheaper than a new truck. put on some mods and keep it. guarentee you will be sorry if you dont. ask me how i know.

I'd trade my '14 for an 06-07 5.9 6 speed in a second.

I'd rather have the 6.4 over the Cummins. Sure it has power, but its got a specific job to do. I'd personally not buy a diesel because its cool. I'd go with the gasser myself. 2500 with sports appearance is sexy as hell though!

Specific job? Is that to suck more fuel, have less torque and cost more?

I just realized words i thought i typed i did not. I mean, the Cummins has more power, but it has a specific job to do. However, since you said it, Laramie can be had for 43 - 45k. A Cummins can not be had for that.

Where did you get more expensive from?

I can't argue that, I've never driven one. I prefer the 6.4 over the new laggy Cummins. But even still, the newer gen looks better , and imo is a good buy right now with the deals going on.

If that 06/ 5.9L isn't rusted out with only 110k, I would keep it. Like mentioned before it was one of the best diesels produced by cummins. Perhaps the reason why it's no longer being made.

More expensive as in buying a new 6.4 over keeping the current 5.9 truck.

I sorta did the same thing....I had a 2005 Ram Cummins that I bought new and traded for a gasser after a few years. The Cummins was super wonderful, and we pulled a big 5th wheel all over. We parked the RV and didn't need the diesel so I went to a half ton Ram Hemi. The change was a good one....a lot less maintenance and fuel was cheaper and it rode a lot smoother. I no longer needed the power of the diesel.

Well, wifey talked me into a new 5th wheel, and at 8,000+ pounds I was not comfortable towing with a 1/2 ton. So, we bought a new Ram 2500 and I opted for the 6.4 with 373 gears since the RV was smaller. I did think about another diesel but decided the 6.4 Hemi was enough engine for what I needed.

It turned out to be a good choice for me. I have the ease of a gas motor with less maintenance and no DEF stuff. It rides better than the old Cummins with the coil rear springs (though certainly not as smooth as the 1/2 ton), its easier to drive as a daily driver, and it pulls the RV very well. Most places we go are fairly flat so it rides pretty happily in 5th gear most of the time when towing....4th on occasion but almost never into 3rd. MPG runs between 7 and 10+ depending on speed, terrain and head winds, just like any other rig.

Overall, I am happy with the truck...I bought a Tradesman so it doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but I added a Sony radio with a backup camera and bluetooth. It's a pretty good looking and pretty comfortable truck and I am happy with it.

I drove a F250 and a GMC 3/4 ton and, while very decent, I just liked the Ram better. The GMC's ride was much more harsh and the F250's towing mirrors were not to my liking, and both trucks seemed to have significantly less power.

They call it a half ton, but its actually a bit more. None the less, have you towed 8k with a 1500?

The interior and comfort of the 4th gen is wonderful. That aside, I would keep the 06 Cummins for what you do. 6.4 is nice, but I was very underwhelmed when comparing it to the Cummins.
