Hey guys so i have a 2014 5.7 hemi dodge ram 1500 i just bought it new off the lot a few months ago. for the past few days i been getting this humming noise that comes and goes it seems to be coming from the engine area somewhere. im not that mechanically inclined so has anyone had this issue? or maybe know what it is or if it is just normal? the noise usually comes out when i have it in park or in drive but holding the brake.

It could be many different things, and not being able to hear it will make this quite difficult via the Internet.

Is this within the first 30 seconds or so of startup, is it just random such as red lights? When you are in park, and the humming is happening, does it stay consistently on or does it seem to cycle on and off?

Does it seem to happen when there is slight rotation pressure or more on the steering wheel? Is the noise very loud or is it something you may just not have noticed and are noticing now or is this a very definite, new noise that you're sure has never existed?

Well let's see it happens randomly like when I'm stopped at red I I ghats at times and it cycles on and off it does not stay on constantly. And as I said when it's in drive but with foot on brake it cycles on and off at times other times you don't hear it at all i don't hear it at acceleration or turning the wheel.

I think it is the engine cooling fan. IIRC reading about some of the technology used in the late model Ram 1500 trucks, is the use of pulse width modulated motors. These motors are used for the engine cooling fan, fuel pump and interior climate system.

Edit:
"Parasitic Loss Reduction
Pulse-width modulation (PWM) is a fuel-saving technology for the Ram 1500, which reduces parasitic electrical load. The technology not only eliminates unnecessary load on the alternator but also improves the durability of benefitting systems. The forward cooling fan takes advantage of PWM, adding a 0.2 percent improvement in fuel efficiency."

It might be the cooling fan? Is there anything I can do to see it it is or is it just something normal. I do have an appointment at dodge on Tues to have it checked out just in case rather the noise be gone now though sucks having a new truck and this annoying little problem comes up.

I suspect it is a normal sound, as the fan has a variable speed that is unrelated to engine RPM. You are likely to hear it more while stopped and the engine running. More so in warm/hot weather. My truck makes the same humming sound, and has a slight concurrent vibration.

Please post back on what they tell you at the dealer.
