It keeps any debris/metal that are in cooler/lines from contaminating the new transmission.

Likely costs less than hours of flushing that might not get it all out of the system.

If you still have a say in it ask to remove the thermal bypass unit in those lines even in Montana. What happened to the transmission? Did they itemize, what is the charge for this? Sounds pretty thorough more then I would think unless there was a reason. If the fluid was burnt, yes I could see this.

Yes. Most RFE transmissions fail from too much heat. Ancillary equipment needs to be replaced with the transmission. Yes, this is a "thing" if the thermostat bypass isn't removed. Don't put another one back in or it will fail again at the same mileage. Put in a "bypass" block from RevMax. Then use oxidation-resistant trans oil. Red Line +C ATF is a favorite around here for buttery-smooth shifting.

And yes, that is what I have in my 66RFE transmission.

trans fluid black. wouldn't move in drive but reverse still worked. It started clunking when down shifting from 2nd to 1st, then just quite working

Will a Dodge Dealership put in the bypass. I have no idea on any of this stuff

This heat thing is interesting I hardly pull heavy maybe a couple times a year. I watch my trans temp closely and it is always 150-170. but than again I have no idea what is a normal temp for a transmission

I doubt the dealership will install an aftermarket bypass. If they will I'm sure they'll void whatever warranty the new transmission comes with.

I would change out the lines and cooler. If it was a warranty thing and on their dime I doubt they'd change them out. They'd flush everything and hope they got any and all the contaminants out. Then pray it makes it past whatever the warranty period is.

Depending on how long you plan on keeping the truck I'd look for an actual transmission shop.

I highly recommend the bypass and redline c+ like was mentioned.

The factory lines probably have a spot for the thermo valve, they might want to put it back for legal reasons as well, so you might have to dyi after, see video below, locate it on your truck, easy swap. Redline c+ is a great upgrade but they will need it all when they fluid up, like 14 quarts maybe more for a hd might want 20 on hand or 5 gallons extra is fine no shelf life. You really need this simple upgrade too, but again they will need it now. Is the trans being put in now?

So the thermo valve is a terrible fail point, the bypass looks identical but has no valves, just flow.

I would buy that exact metal thread upgrade, many RAM forum guys bought that, and it's a bargain. Other brands often fit loose, those are tight. The plastic threads that come with the filters often break and there goes the transmission, it is a one time purchase. Even if you miss it on install still get it, next time a fluid change then install it 60k miles at most.

The 66rfe takes 12 quarts, only 157 now shipped to your door. Ask if you can use a thermo bypass instead of the factory thermo valve, or just ask if they can supply that instead on thermal valve, if not it's ok you can do that anytime like even a year later, do that at your convenience. good luck with it

Oh yeah make sure they are giving a new Solenoid pack, important, you don't want any used stuff especially that item.

Difference between redline c+ and whatever they will use is they will most likely use line 1 below, and c+ is line 2 and 5 combined esters and pao, meaning the oil operates much better in the extremes hot and cold, very benefivcial; for transmissions.

Sorry if I missed it and not sure if it changes anything but are we sure OP has a 66RFE tranny? I thought right around 2018 was the change from 6spd RFE to 8spd.

How many miles did your transmission have on it when it crapped out?

I picked one of these up a few years ago.

So every year both of the vehicles that we have with auto transmissions get 4 quarts sucked out and 4 new in. Takes 5-10 minutes and everything is done from under the hood. Then every 30-40k they get a pan drop and filter change. I have a measuring bucket I use to see how much comes out. I've got 141k on my 66rfe and knock on wood no problems so far.

The reason they mention changing the cooler and lines is based on the concern they would have debris and trash stuck in them from the failed trans. The last thing you want to do is install a new trans and then pump debris into it. At minimum you should flush the lines and cooler out, and replacing probably isn't a bad idea just to be on the safe side.
