Have many members used this UK source?
There have been 3 or 4 people confirm it in the original 8.4 upgrade thread (2yrs of posts) that recently got deleted somehow.

Is there anyway to tell by part number the age of the radio? Also besides firmware which can be upgraded were there many changes between between 14-17 on the radios. Was planning on getting a UAS UAQ but after looking I don't really want to pay an extra 600 dollars just for android auto.

Keep in mind the RA2, RA3 and RA4 radios still have value too which can offset the upgrade cost.

It's strange that none of the prices seem to have gone down after the new and improved models came out.

Thats true. I've just noticed I can get an RA4 for about $400-525 depending on which deal I catch. Whereas I'm looking at $1,000 roughly for a UAQ or UAS and supply is pretty limited. I use android auto on my phone with my 5.0 using my phone mount which I could still do with my 8.4. Just don't know if its worth $500-600 to not have to clip my phone in if I want to use Google maps. I know where i'm going 98% of the time so I don't use nav much anyways.

Mainly was curious if there were changes 14-17 in screen quality or anything. I can get a RA4 from a 16 Ram for under 500 right now. Doesn't have the anti theft code but has the vin so should be able to get it.

After the firmware update the radios are pretty much the same with the same features. If you get an older radio you can update the firmware and it will have all the features of the newer radios. I actually put a UAQ radio in my truck and took it back out because I just didn't like it. I thought the graphics and the sound quality was nowhere near as good as the VP4 NA in my opinion. Also the UAS and UAQ radio's don't display certain things on your EVIC correctly Because it doesn't have the bit data. With all that being said I would recommend trying to find a radio out of 15 or newer because it will have the Travelink and Real Time Traffic free for 5 years. The 13 and 14 radios only had a one year free subscription. Also if you ever decide you want to install a Cargo Cam the firmware on the 13 and 14 radios will not allow you to display the backup camera on the radio screen. Unless you keep the 17.11.07 firmware It will only display your backup camera in the review mirror. Most people are not going to install a factory Cargo Cam but I thought I would mention it. I think MPgrimm2 has a list of part numbers but it may have been deleted when the thread disappeared. He may chime in if he sees this. Long story short. You want to make sure it's a VP4 NA radio and preferably out of a 15 or newer Ram or Jeep Grand Cherokee. I would personally look for a 16 or newer if you are ever considering a factory Cargo Cam. The newer the radio you find the longer you'll have the Travelink and Real Time Traffic subscription for free.

I would not spend more than $600 for a UAQ. The prices you see are from resellers finding them at salvage yards or take offs and then jacking up the price with some only selling them as part of an upgrade kit.

Be your own middle man and get them at a decent price. It just takes a little time...

Another thing I forgot to mention is if you're using an android phone your voice texting should work fine on the VP4 NA. I use mine all the time and it works great.

Sweet good info thanks. I was trying to find that list but yeah with the old thread going down its been tough to find anything again. I'd assume if I can get one preferably with a VIN number that would make my life easier as well. Like the 16 Ram with vin for under 500 I'm looking at. The dealer should be able to get me the anti theft from what I've read. So that one might be a decent option

Yeah at 600 I'd go UAQ. 100 is worth it for android auto to me but 600 isn't. Honestly either way you have to do something to get android auto to work. If I get a UAQ I have to plug my phone in for it to work. If i get an RA4 I can just bluetooth to my phone and clip my phone in an have android auto, just not on the main screen. So its either plug it in or connect phone to mount.

Yeah I use it with my 5.0 and it works great. Have Google assistant, text, maps, ect all by voice and without being wired.

If you're getting the Vin number with the radio that is a plus because it makes future firmware updates much easier. The unlock code is very easy to get. If your dealer won't give it to you there are several places online you can get it for $10. My radio is a 2016 and I'm using it in my 2014 and it works great.

It's all a matter of preference some people like the UAS and UAQ radios because of the android auto and Apple car play but honestly I wasn't going to use that feature enough to make it worth dealing with all the glitches they have, plus the sound quality just wasn't there. Since I have an android phone my voice texting works great with the RA4. Had I had an iPhone I probably would have considered keeping the UAQ radio in my truck and dealing with the things I didn't like about it.

Part numbers for the various years are in the first few posts of this thread, so that info is still safe and available.

and since you have a 17 truck you shouldn't run into issues using a 16 radio like the folks with a 13-14 truck do.

Also, just to clarify, for 13-15 RAx radios to display both backup and cargo cam menu buttons, only SW version 17.11.07 will work, all other versions are bu cam only.

2016+ radios are capable of both on all versions.

Thanks for the assist guys.

FYI: I'm slowly rebuilding the 8.4 upgrade thread & links that were deleted (lost 2 yrs of posts). Now in our vendor section per mods request. Please subscribe/post so the folks that need it can find info for support from the forum.

How do you use voice texting with the RA4? On my radio I need to subscribe to UConnect Access to be able to custom voice reply to texts.

Am I missing an easier (free) way to do it?

For whatever reason most of the time when you install these radios in a vehicle they did not come out of and enter the security code it automatically removes the Uconnect subscription but the voice texting still works perfectly. If your truck came with the radio you have and you let the subscription expire it will no longer work but for some reason it always seems to work in trucks with transplanted radios. I have actually had it happen in the past in one of my radios that it stopped working after I did an update. I took my radio out of my truck put it in another truck entered the security code and it turned back on again and then I put the radio back of my truck and it worked perfect again. If your truck came with the the 8.4 You may want to try pulling a radio out and sticking it in another ram and then activating the security code and let it remove your subscription and your voice texting should work if it doesn't now. The question I would have is when you re installed in your truck and entered security code would it automatically pick up your subscription and not let the voice texting work? My voice texting on this radio has worked for three years with no issues. I was also disappointed when I installed the UAQ to discover that you cannot voice text unless you are connected to android auto which is another reason I took the UAQ radio back out of my truck.

If you have Android just connect Bluetooth, have Android auto on your phone and say ok Google text so and so blah blah. Works good through the truck speakers. If the uconnect idea doesn't work. Probably a lot more accurate than uconnect is as well
