That is the question.

I would like examples of both if you can provide. Thank you.
I've had led but in a VW CC Rline.,I've never had Hid.

Awesome. Thanks.
I'm looking at the retrofit source system Hid.

When you guys are talking about rotating the build to 6oclock, is that with the bulb in the housing?

Reflectors=LED

Projectors=hid

HID: brighter. But more likely to fail, bulbs don’t last anywhere near as long as LED, more difficult and time consuming to install, many components that can fail, get very hot, have a longer warm up time.

LED: more reliable, easier to install, less power draw, don’t get as hot. Led bulbs have horrible output and are not as bright as LED

When you buy an hid kit buy 1 spare of all the parts. Even if you have a warranty because it takes I while to get a replacement

Funny, I see a lot of people talking about HIDs being problematic, yet I had a 2003 Acura TL that we sold after 12 years of ownership with never one issue with HID headlights. My 2011 G37, same deal....its now just about 8 years old and never a single issue.

But LEDs have horrible output? There is no real good alternative then....HID is finicky and LED is low output?

Yeah oem HID kits as a whole are great. Aftermarket HID kits not so much. Even top of the line HID kits like Morimoto can be finicky. Especially on a ram. Cars that come with HIDs from the factory are programmed and designed to run HID systems. A vehicle that came from the factory with incandescent bulbs is programmed for incandescent bulbs then you’re throwing in a universal hid kit or in our case a canbus kit where you have to start throwing in relays and resistors it’s just more crap that can fail. Aftermarket just isn’t the same quality as oem in most cases.

So yeah oem HIDs are great. The best possible solution for us ram owners to get the least amount of worry of failure is going and getting led projectors and retrofitting. Or getting a set of housings with built in LEDs.

Also infinity is one of the best in lighting.

I've had HIDs in my Ford F350 since 2006 and in my Ram since 2017. Have not had one failure or problem. Same story for my son's 2005 Excursion and 2007 Ford F350.

Can't agree with mpress2570's comments.

Thanks for the info.

Where does something like AlfaOBD factor in, since we have access to a whole ton of lighting settings, including "LED headlights present", "LED fog lights present", etc?

It’s case by case. My chargers hid kit lasted for over 4 years never had a single issue. My rams HIDs lasted 6 months and my relay harness failed and I lucky bought a spare of everything went in did a trouble shoot found the issue replaced it that night and was back in action and haven’t had a problem since in a year.

I’m not saying HID kits are bad. They’re actually my favorite and I can’t stand when people recommend LED bulbs, but there’s no getting around the fact that there is way more possibilities for failure in an HID systems especially in vehicles that have a canbus system. Fords don’t have canbus therefore I can see why you could have a kit last forever. Even people with canbus systems can have a kit last forever like I said it’s case by case. But when you start throwing in relays and resistors on top of resistors it’s way more likely you’ll have an issue. Which is all the more reason to get a quality kit and spend the money over some cheap low cost kit.

I’ve never used Alfaobd or obdgenie but my guess is no. Unless you can go in and tell the computer “this is how much power your lights should be drawing” for all the lights. I’d guess no but I could be wrong.

Thats the idea....someone in a thread today said they were able to rid themselves of resistors, etc after changing some lighting settings. Ill have to dig up exactly what they did.

Found it. https://www.ramforum.com/posts/1856256/

Quad headlights with stock bulbs, but LEDs in the turn signal and parking lights. Needed resistors before using AlfaOBD to set LED lighting settings.

Based on that Im thinking the most value upgrade would be LED bulbs in turn signals and parking lights, H9 headlamp bulbs. And maybe LED bulbs in the taillights as well.

Along with the standard LED license plate bulbs, backup, etc.

Nice. Give it a try that would be awesome. That’s something I would love looking into doing if I wasn’t going the LED projector route.
