Lifter tick? Or exhaust tick?

I’m hoping this was my tick issue cause I had no broken bolts. This is a assumption that this was my issue I won’t find out till I put it back together

Here are two links to sounds I’m experiencing from my 2013 ram 1500 sport with 5.7 hemi. I am trying to get a better idea what it might be, I’m stuck between lifters or exhaust leak but I had the bolts replaced and gasket about 2 years ago. I’ve been told it was my lifters, but I’ve also been told it might be the exhaust. I have no check engine light on, nor oil light on. Also it doesn’t quiet down like the exhaust manifold tick did before repairing it, but it did get to the point to where no matter warming temp or not it did tick, but this case wasn’t that this just randomly started.

mine does the same thing as in the top video you posted but after a little idle time it clears up the colder it is the longer it takes to clear up. mines a 19 only has 55k on it i've only had it a year and put 26k on it myself. it started doing it when it got really cold last winter (upstate ny)and then it started doing it at every cold start.. (at first i thought it was because i switched to mobil 1 full synthetic from whatever the dealer was putting in it, as i made sure to get my first oil change at the dealer) now it does it even on some warm starts where i have been driving then stop for a few minutes get some gas or a coffee then fire it back up and it will do it for a little bit before it clears up. mine was acquired certified used so it may or may not be covered under my warranty idk. if its just the typical hemi tick associated with the manifold bolts i read about im not messing with it because they will just use the same cheap bolts they have in there and ill be doing it again in another 30k lol.. that other video you posted sounds more like a moving part tapping something.. sounds like you have two different things going on to me.. im not mechanic though.

@jimmerz76, it has nothing to do with the bolts themselves. The manifold warps like crazy and the bolts break. That's why when dealers replace the manifolds, the bolts end up breaking again.

If the manifolds are milled/sanded flat, they will not warp again because they are already heat seasoned.

Mine did that for the first few seconds upon cold start up, then stopped. Was manifold bolts on both sides, so got all new bolts and heat shields (extended warranty).

Yah mine doesn’t go away upon warming up, what concerns me but right now it’s at the shop cause I changed everything and it still ticks lol

Did you end up changing manifolds and bolts as well? Mine sounds the same and does not stop at warm up. It’s going into the shop on Friday.

Thx for the info, will try the rp 20-820 filter next change. I think the tick sounds the same as before redline, but it lasts only a short time after cold starting. Tick lasted a lot longer time b/4 redline. Do you have a preference on model of OBD II code reader?

if you plan on keeping your truck, get the better unit. worth it.

HELP! My lifters definitely making noise. Truck has 130,000 miles and noise started at 115,000. I've used Mystery Oil and Lucas oil and the ticking continues. Been reading a lot on Red Line oil + good oil filter to eliminate this noise. Does this work? Most say 5w-30 oil, but my truck calls for 5W-20. Do I use the 5W-30 instead? Thanks for the help everybody!!

It's works, but for the hemi, your lifter tick is likely something different.

That could be lifters, I like it as it goes away. In theory it could also be exhaust, both "can" go away when warm, in the case of exhaust it goes away because the seals and metal expand with heat. In the case of lifters it can go away because splash lubrication finally found it's spot. I lean towards lifters because it was quiet on start up, usually if it is exhaust bolts you will get tick so fast you think it was there before you started your truck.

What can you do? I'd drop in 15 ounces of lubegard biotech like immediately and see if you can quiet that. This does not mask the situation like an oil thickner would, but rather add some powerful additives that already are in your oil just more of them. See if it changes at all, if you change any aspect of that tick you will know it is lifters. Find the threads in my sig, you can fix noisy lifters with lubrication backed with science, the science is in the threads. Buy a royal purple 20-820 filter, it is known to avoid some filter restriction you get with many options, it is a known issue this is the best way to rule out filter restriction.
