Hey everyone,

I may be overlooking something obvious, but is it possible to lock your doors with the driver door open and truck running?

To clarify, the truck is a tip start 2016, and I’m asking because when I have my dog in the back seat I would like to be able to go inside a market and lock him inside with the truck running and AC going. I’ve tried and the locks don’t seem to want to operate with the truck running.

I used to do this all the time with my previous truck (Silverado) with a traditional key. I would unclip the fob from the key and leave it running, close the door and use the fob for lock and unlock. I thought I might be able to do something similar by removing the valet key while running and locking the doors with the switch on the door panel, and re-enter with the valet key. I’m not having any luck so far.

Do I turn it off and restart with the valet key and take the fob with me? Any answers/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is tip start the push button start? If so I had a journey with that and would use the fob to lock the doors. Doors won't lock if the fob is left in the vehicle, keeps you from locking yourself out. I believe that if you lock it that way though the dinger will ding saying key fob not in vehicle, but it does lock the doors and vehicle running.

Yes if you are talking about push to start, just take the fob with you, close the door and lock it. I do this on my Journey, and was one of the biggest reasons I wanted push to start on my Ram. Makes it easy when the dog or kids are in the car and I need to run In somewhere quickly.

If you want to leave key fob truck running while you run into the store. Lock the doors before you you open the door to get out, then push the lock down manually (don't use the power lock button). Make sure you have the physical key to unlock the door(this doesn't apply to Key N Go).

Tip Start is not the push button. It's the funky looking key that you plug in and tip it to the side, let go and the truck continues to crank.

I do the same thing with my dog in the truck, but I got an aftermarket remote start, so I get out, lock the door with the fob, then remote start it. I've never actually tried with the fob in it. You can program the run time up to 25 minutes I think. $150 and a half hour's time and you're in business.

I have an aftermarket remote start with the factory Tip Start key fob. I do the same as JohnnyMac with the dog. However a few weeks ago I had my truck running with the fob in the ignition and my camper hooked up with the dog in the back. I was was getting ready to leave the campground and I must have hit the lock button on the armrest and when I closed the door it locked. I'm like WTF! I didn't think it would lock with the fob in the truck. I had to call a friend to bring my spare key. I found out later the truck will lock with the fob in the ignition. Lesson learned? Bring the spare key and keep it in the camper and keep the spare camper keys in the truck.

Not ideal, but couldn't you just turn off the truck then autostart? My doors automatically lock when I use the autostart function on my OEM key fob.

I’m gonna try this today, thanks man. I also just realized I may need to change the setting for how and which doors are unlocked when put in park.

Why not just walk away, start it with the remote start, then keep walking away? It'll run for 15 minutes, then you can start it again from the app as needed. Though, your dog shouldn't really be in the car that long by himself, even with the air on.

Take your dog with you :) most stores could care less anymore as long as the dog is mellow.
