Well, my first tank of gas is in the books. For my first fill up, I used 85 unleaded. My truck is a new 2014 1500 QC 4x4 with 5.7, 8 sp, and 3.92. Most of my driving was commuting 20 miles to work, 45-55 mph with occasional stop lights. The computer told me I was averaging 17.6 mpg until last weekend when I had some errands to do around town. The short trips killed my average for the entire tank, reducing it to 16.5 mpg. I figured the mpg the old fashioned way and the calculator said 15.8 mpg for the tank. I filled it back up with 87 gas and we'll see how it does. Now if I can just keep my foot out of the pedal so much...

Put some miles on the vehicle and you'll see an increase in the MPG once everything beds itself properly.

I was getting about the same when my truck was brand new. I believe mine has the taller gears though. I've got about 3700 miles now and on my last fill up calculated 17.9 on midgrade fuel. Gets a little better every tank.

Yep, the short trips kill these trucks with respect to MPG. The one that always gets me is the average MPH. I would think it should be 10MPH higher. It seems like I'm always on the freeway or highway moving along pretty well and the average is like yours.... in the high 20s. I must get abducted by aliens temporarily throughout the day and they leave my truck running while I'm "away".

I would stay away from 85 gas. If you read the manual it actually recommends 89 and I believe it says 87 is acceptable. I'm right under 17 for my hand calculations. Fuelly is a nice program. My computer always reads 1-1.5 higher. I'm at 3300 miles.

I'm looking forward to a long trip to see how it does. I am already noticing a 1-2 mpg improvement on the computer with the 87 octane. Still learning how to get the best mpg with this truck, i.e., light on the pedal while accelerating, let it coast down hills and to stoplights, just enough pedal to maintain speed, and most important, no drag racing stoplight to stoplight.

I never noticed this before. Cheapest in my area was 89 with 10% ethanol forever but then they started making 87 with ethanol. I will start using 89 again, thanks for the heads up.

28 is your avg speed?? I imagine Id be pissed driving anywhere around you lol

I drive fairly hard (sorta) getting about 15 mpg. Wouldn't drive slower even if it netted me 25% better mileage.

Same truck specs as you and mpg as well time and time again. Pulled 23 on one trip. But this is of the evic, so maybe 15-20 would be about right.

Lol!! The several traffic lights I go through each way on my commute drags down my overall speed average. I'm typically anywhere between 0 and 7 mph over the speed limit. Still pretty slow for some folks though.

Tell me about it, my drive to work has 32 lights, more often than not MOST are red. I can get DECENT mileage with the truck if I didn't have to stop 50 times in 3 blocks, and wait an average of 1.5 minutes per red. that's like 30+ mins of sitting there for nothing!!!

I love to roast "modded" civics from a stoplight. Damn backwards hat french kids with p-flows and 3 inch magnaflows sticking out from under the bumper on an angle. Lol.
Feels good :roflsquared:

As for mpg, winter is the worst, i dont even look at the readout lol. Extra cold starts, winter blend gas, idling and 4wd = ****** mpg

Also guys in high altitude places like colorado 85 is what you put in motors that call for 87. Our 89 is 87, et cetra.
The higher the altitude the lower the concentration of oxygen. The lower the concentration of o2 the less fuel required. The lower effective compression ratio allows lower octane fuel (that would prematurely detonate at sea level) to be used.
