Well I had my work lift up my truck and look for a leak but they didn't find anything where it'd leak out 4 quarts of oil and there was oil inside my muffler.. So I must be burning it then... Best options now?

Find a low mileage one to swap with or rebuild yours.. There's no 'good' option here. Sorry man

Pull spark plugs and see what you find. You may have a one bad cylinder or more. Compression check will tell you more. Good luck.

Thank you. If a cylinder is bad or more... Better to fix that or just drop a used engine in?

Depends on your mechanical knowledge to be honest.

If you're decent, you and a couple buddies could probably drop one in in a weekend.

You have to evaluate your engine to determine the extent of the problem. If you have good mechanical abilities it is possible to repair a motor to a certain extent. If you are not mechanical then drop in a known good engine is next. Next you are buying a rebuilt engine and having it installed by a shop which can get out of hand quickly unfortunately. Need to have a trusted shop when going this route.

We have a good mechanic in the family who might be able to help with this. It just seems crazy to need a rebuilt or different engine

If your loosing that much oil it doesn't seem crazy to me. How long have you owned the truck? Miles you put on it? Do you normally check your fluids?

Unless you bought it from someone you trust you have no idea how the maitence has been kept up with it an if it's been abused or not, 10+ yr old truck with 150,000+ miles can take a toll on a engine

I'm guessing it was abused. So burning oil could be rings or valves? Anything else that could be the problem? Someone mentioned PVC valve ?

You won't be losing that much oil through your PVC. If the valve was never changed and stuck closed it may be contributing to your problem, but that's lack of maintenance and sort of a moot point by now.

A compression and leak down tests are both cheaper than throwing rings at an engine that needed valve stem seals. Compression test you can do yourself very easily. Invest in a compression tester.

The best we can offer online here is speculation, you need to start eliminating possible causes. If the problem is in you're heads then you can keep your motor and do the tear down yourself in frame. If its rings, personally if be looking for a new engine. If you aren't mechanically inclined, or this is getting over your head, just bite the bullet and at least have a shop tell you what's wrong.

Better to be checking oil when engine is warm or cold?

I check mine on a warm engine that has set for about 15mins to let the oil drain back down and settle.
