Took truck in to get tranny serviced and a reputable tranny shop in town and they called me back and had me come back in a show me the "alarming amount of metal on the magnet in the pan and the piece of the Over Drive clip ring on the magnet"

Basically we came to the conclusion that it would be smarter to rebuild the tranny at this point ($2500-$2700 for out the door with the dodge weak points fixed).

But the truck has only 86,000 miles and has very rarely ever towed anything it is whole life.. are the 46re just that bad of trannys??

Damn I'd be real tempted to just get a megaviper for a couple hundred more and never worry about it again. And yeah think stock these trans just aren't very good, I know the one in my truck has been changed twice though it does have over twice as many miles

If it's rebuilt very well and taken care of, it can last. I know of people who get them redone on the cheap and they blow after 40k, or redone well&are taken care of last 200k+.

The $2500-$2700 quote was for returning the tranny to stock quality and removing the dodge weak points like the check valve and such...

They also quoted me about $3000-$3100 for the HD setup which is just beefed up parts like stronger torque convertor and such...

But the more I talked to the mechcanic, the more he said I would most likly be fine with just the standard rebuild because I never tow with the truck.

The warranty they offer is 2 year or 20,000 miles. Whats your guys thought oh the standard vs HD ans the warranty?

Just had my 3rd gen 545rfe trans rebuilt, got I back today actually. I paid $2k for a complete rebuild back to stock with a heavy duty torque converter and a few beefed up Sonnax parts. The warranty is 3 years, unlimited miles. I personally would ask for a minimum of 2 year warranty and unlimited miles...20k mile warranty doesn't provide much confidence in their craftsmanship.

The shop owner is a really straight shooting guy and he told me that the parts alone to return it to stock is $1780(not including labor for installation)

That sound right?

The funny thing is that my tranny isn't even blown... like fill it up with fluid right now and it would drive and shift decent... the rebuild is a cautionary measurement and I have the cash set aside...

But ya that does sound pretty costly for a rebuild... like I know thats including fixing the "dodge weak points" and adding stuff like Jr shift kit but still...

That's still high. That's more than my whole build was just in parts man.

$1780 just for parts? You can get a full kit with all the viper parts for much less.

I called the shop again and they said the $2500-$2700 is for a full rebuild. All new clutchs, rebuild valve body, shift kit, torque convertor, etc.

I've called around and I've got prices from $1900 to $3100... I am thinking the people below my quote of $2500-$2700 are just fixing what is wrong and not doing a full rebuild..?

Are they replacing any hard parts like planetarys, or drums, etc? I just priced out 95% of a rebuild including upgraded planets, GM EPC conversion, upgraded bands, red altos and kolenes, sure cure kit, sprags, etc. Everything except input/ouput shafts, drums since they usually don't break AFAIK. Without a TC and my bill just in parts came out to just over $1000. I think they are marking up the price by a lot. HTH

Got another price of $2750 from the shop for a rebuild from a vendor that comes with new clutches, shift kit, valve body mod, torque convertor, etc and has a nation wide 24,000 24 month warranty

You might want to call around and see if any place will rebuild with you buying the parts. I'd still just buy a viper though :naughty:

The shop also said they leave the check valve in on gas Rams but typically take them out of diesel rams .... and that I woukd have to authorize them to remove the valve... should I just wait untill the two year warranty is up before I have them remove the check valve?

They said the gasers typically drain back so fast that the check valve prevents this, otherwise you would need to let the system prime for about 20 seconds every time you start the truck

Take it out. You should be letting your truck sit in neutral for a little bit before taking off anyway. I would rather deal with that then having a part that could potentially clog up and overheat my tranny.

Don't you run the risk of messing up your torque convertor by taking out the check valve?
