I'm looking to upgrade to a 2500 (non PW). I believe the GVW of the 2500 Laramie (6.4) is 10,000 lbs. NYS DMV says if the unlaiden weight is over 6000lbs it has to be registered commercial, which is a deal breaker for me. What class reg are you guys in and/or what's your truck's unlaiden weight?

I am not totally sure on my understanding for what you are asking. However, I will give it a shot. I think you are asking for the curb weight CW of the truck. I believe this is the GVWR minus the payload rating. So, CW = GVWR - payload, for example, CW = 10,000 - 2886. Which is 7,114 lbs. roughly 3.5 tons.

Thanks for responding, but I'm aware of those weights. It's really a matter of what our DMV terminology is. New York DMV says Maximum Vehicle Weight, which they also refer to as unlaiden weight. I'm specifically asking NYS 2500 owners as they've had to comply with our DMV regulations.

I had to go with Commercial plates on mine. Wasn't by choice.

Over 6000 pounds you can register it passenger if you modify it to meet the NYS DMV rules and that labels it a passenger vehicle registration. I wouldn't hesitate call right down to Swan Street in Albany and get a definitive answer before you pull the trigger on anything. You know our state is tough on us!

I read that, but the required mods aren't obvious. "Just leave your HD axle over here, it'll be fine"...

My 12 Power Wagon is commercial. And for all you guys in and around Orange County we need to make a meet and see what we can get going.

Here in Ca there are similar requirements with PU trucks. The DMV automatically goes commercial plate route unless you specifically request passenger plates. Problem is if you go that route, do not get caught with Anything in the bed. If you do, you will wish you paid the extra money from the start.

Seriously.. That's not a NY thing (at least for the foreseeable future), I checked.

Last time I checked which has been a while...I believe anything over 5,500 lbs. I have owned MANY vehicles especially trucks and weight has always determined what plate it gets. Even my half ton Raptor(1st gen) had commercial plates because of the weight.

Yep... One problem is that I've seen them tagged both ways. It seems like it's an owner's preference sometimes (maybe), which is why I'm trying to get to the facts before I pull the trigger.

Yeah I have seen it both ways too but I have tried and they wouldn't let me. Registration is less and less restrictions with passenger plates so I never wanted commercial and always requested passenger but they wouldn't let me do it. Seems like the city guys have an easier time getting passenger plates for some reason.

Not to brag but you can pretty much put a passenger plate on anything in Oregon as long it’s not used for farm, business, non profit, or any other commercial purposes.
