Lol, same county. I'm pretty sure you're about a mile from my place... The conflicting info is making me crazier than normal which according to my wife is a pretty high bar to hit...

There use to be a cop in town that would stop you and check the bed of your truck,if you had tools or landscape stuff he would write you a summons for out of class plates:mad:

Indeed I have, but I appreciate the post. That document is what started me on this journey in the first place. I see the numbers, but I know for a fact that Owners with 2500s are registering as Passenger, with more than the allowed 6k unladen gross weight. The "permanent modifications" that would allow me to register as Passenger, according to DMV are not gonna happen...Lol

  • If you have a modified pick-up truck with an unladen weight greater than 6,000 lbs., then you may register it in the passenger class if it meets the following conditions:
    • the pick-up truck does not have any business advertisements and is used exclusively for non-commercial purposes
    • a camper top having one or more side windows completely encloses the truck bed,
    • the pick-up truck has seats, seat fittings, or camping equipment installed in the truck bed ('camping equipment' indicates that you have a bed, a stove, or a refrigerator in the vehicle)
NOTE: These modifications must be permanent. If you use the pick-up truck without the required modifications, then you must register it in the commercial registration class.

Yes, see my last post, quoting the DMV "permanent mods". I don't want a cap and the crap they call out... lol

I think they are just lying to the DMV and hoping they won't get caught. Maybe a few cases of genuine ignorance. I talked to one guy at an estate sale we were holding a few years ago who had a passenger plated 2500 and he claimed the dealer registered it that way when he bought it.

In PA a 2500 you have a choice of how to register it. I think there are only 2 weight class options but not positive. Mine is registered class 3 (10,000lbs) and I think the other option is class 2 (8600lbs). Class 3 is about $180/year for registration. Not sure how much class 2 is. Same with 1500's. You can register class 1 or class 2. I think class 1 is 6200 and class 2 is 7600 or something like that. I'm sure these numbers are wrong but you get the point.

Not sure if I missed it but why don't you want commercial plates? It's been years since I've had passenger plates. I've only owned 2500's both gas and diesel over the past 10 years.

Many highways that I use have a Commercial restriction, I want to keep using them. What state are you in?

NY. I've run on I81, I87 and I90 towing my car trailer with 3/4 ton truck on the back and never had a issue. Commercial plates aren't a issue. You don't need a dot number unless you plan on towing and your combined weight is above 26k (If I remember right). Commercial plates keep you legal if you plan on towing or hauling anything. Basically just because you have commercial plates on a truck you use as a dd and may never tow with it doesn't mean you are restricted on what roads you can drive on.

Right, I got all that (CDL-A here). Never mentioned a DOT number, that's way outside the scope of this discussion. The I's are a no-brainer, it's all the parkways in downstate NY which I use that have the Commercial restriction.

I know you never mentioned a dot number. Just put it out there. I believe those restrictions don't apply to passenger vehicles with commercial plates. Most likely have weight restrictions. But your best bet would be to call the dmv and nysdot for factual information.

I wonder if that's because you got a 3500?

I couldn't remember if there was a choice or not with the HD trucks whether you could have commercial or passenger plates. I should know....LOL

most of the cops in our town are great but there is always one

I get that, boy do I get that. Getting away with writing a plate ticket because someone had tools in the bed....nah, that's straight up BS.
