Oil Filter Thread

Imho it matters if you are running a long oci.

so cut them both open and measure, the filter housing means nothing. And also cut them open and inspect both media's after a 7500 mile run. Because that is what I did, and why i'd never run paper again on any vehicle ever. Also Larry, if you want the bigger filter the 20-820 Royal Purple is the bigger filter and will fit your truck. RP has a different filter for your year, but the bigger one will fit just as good as the 10-48 smaller filter, most people here use the bigger filter. I don't know if wix has the larger filter, I imagine if you search for the 2010 ram wix filter it will be the bigger size and likely will fit.

Yea the smaller filters are only spec'd because of the EPAS, but honestly if you have basic spatial awareness the bigger filters fit just fine.

Maybe it has been covered, but I know this has been the number one issue for the 3.6 as far as filters go, it appears that Amsoil EA makes a filter for you guys, part number EA15k19.

100% synthetic filter for the canister filters.

!!!Attention product alert!!!

K&N has drastically changed their oil filter design on the HP 10-17; not sure about the others in the K&N lineup.
You can see on the new design the base plate has been replaced with a thin layer of steel in the new two piece design. It the cheapest piece of junk I have ever seen. See pics.
The thread cout has been reduced also. See pics.
And the bypass valve has been replaced as well; it had the spring style design before. Now it has the plunger. Can't say that is worse or better.
Looks like K&N has gone the cheep route; if you're using this product I would reconsider. Considering the cost I think it's a joke.
I included photos of the old and new oil filter for comparison.

I will say I do like the cheese grater, this is an upgrade many manu's are going for.

I think you have them reversed, the first pic is the one we currently have in the store, the second pic is the one we had before, with all the inlet holes. That is the one that I had leak. The second one is made in Mexico, first one in USA.

That could be, the parts store could of have had an old filter left on the shelf. When I take it back I'll look at the others.

Well yeah, plus the threads on the second one aren't actually a part of the baseplate, they are a seperate piece attached to baseplate.

Quality has been going down since 2012 iirc. That is when I stopped using them.

Had a chance to go back to the parts store and return the K&N oil filter. Before I did I confirmed it was made in Mexico. There were to other HP-1017 oil filters and both were made in Mexico as well. Drove across town to Walmart and every K&N HP-1017 on the shelf was made very well with good quality. Looks like an M1 clone to me. Either way there are still some Mexican made oil filters in circulation. Buyer beware.

I think the new plunger design could be better for cold starts, that's the upside. Not sure what the down side would be, maybe let more contaminants in the engine due to oil washing over the filter media through the bypass valve?

I never noticed this until the other day but here is the base plate of the stock Mopar oil filter. It's the same crap design that the Mexico made K&N had. Only difference is Mopar states it's made in USA and the old K&N's state theirs is made in Mexico. But both share the two piece base plate design.
