@Burla i had a 2016 that i used wix xps on, my new 15 i am refusing to install one now... i read thru this whole thread and other websites and bought a RP big and small, also a FE2 big and small... the 820 i got is a 2022 mfg date with the 8 holes and looks stout. The FE2 i noticed has 6 holes BUT one unusually bigger hole. Didnt measure them. So im going to try the 820 since the 10-48 doesnt look like a good flowing unit. I hope theres more info on other spun glass filters to purchase when RP kicks the can. Also taking out the dealer installed oil and putting in PUP 5-20 with lubegard... will probably do the 5-30 switch in the spring

I read a 15 page thread on new Fram FE Endurance filters over @ Booob's. Seems to be some consensus the thing really is a Royal Purple filter clone, and they cheapened the former top of the line Ultra XG.

Kind of a strange marketing strategy, to me.

Update on my storing strategy rp 20-820's, which includes using aladin magic lube 2 which is silicone and storing them inside. So I believe they been stored now since 2016, gonna check them all when I get them down maybe tonight or tomorrow. This is the update, still look good no rust and the rubber still has some protection on it, however it is clearly time to re-apply the magic lube 2 again. So since I am post 5 years, I would say 5 years is a good interval to keep that rubber lubed and crack free. If I find anything new when I lube them all up again, I'll update that. Now use gloves with this stuff not even dawn wash will touch this. If you have pumice that would work, but I would not want this in my sink drains. It is like nothing I have ever tried, incredible product that is so thick prevents some leaks on seals behind a pump no joke.

Sharing this for awareness. I bought several RP 20-820 filters years ago when we thought they were going out of production. Long story short, they all had varying degrees of rust formed on the baseplate.

Since then I have purchased several newer 20-820s with the louvered center tube. Today I changed my oil to SS 0w30 which is a conversion in itself, so I decided to cut it open for $h!ts and giggles. This is what I found. I then decided to sacrifice one of the older ones with rust on them to see what the inside looked like. Looks like they got water in them at one point while in storage. Rust all inside the can, the media was super brittle and tore with VERY little effort. They ADB was cracked/torn in one spot on the used one which I can only assume was because the rubber had degraded. The others like this are now in the trash. Hopefully no damage was done by running the other 3.

If you have any filters that look anything like these THROW THEM AWAY.

thanks brother, if I have any issues with used ones as I will start cutting them open, I will cut open one of my new ones. I havent had any rust. I wonder if the cold stiffened the media but warm doesnt? weird. More work needed here, appreciated.

None of mine have that rust on the face plate like that.

I stored my Frams in Ziploc freezer baggies with dessicant packs so I'm thinking they should be nice and dry. Maybe I should bust out the vacuum sealer and redo them.
Unless you have excessive moisture in the area where you store them I wouldn't worry about it. Those filters I showed came like that and the rust came from where they were stored. It wasn't just moisture either, those got wet, you could see the rust was showing where the droplets of water sat

Yeah, something whack was at play because you arent just talking about one thing, but rather a kitchen sink of problems. Bad rubber or silicone, bad media and rust in several spots. I would be inclined to contact RP and ask what's up. I have never heard about bad silicone, this has to be the first time I ever seen this. If it is one thing you can easily call it poor quality control, but I would think this has to be something else? Good theory about sitting in liquid, could that have caused all of this? maybe the media was wet and then froze? could that explain that? Just dont know what to make of all this being 3 separate issues.

Something other then water? Maybe some solvent in this process? Could explain all of this in theory? Solvent can easily harm silicone, degrade media and cause rust.

So we need sherlock homes to tell us why that media was green?? That could be the key? My wife has the open media filters, I have never seen green anything with rp.

Could a bad batch of adhesive cause this, maybe too much solvent in a batch? You still have that media laying around? Can you try ripping it in other places if you do?

I did try that in several places and it ripped the same, right at where it meets up with the end caps. It's essentially where the mesh backing ends.

How bad do you think this is? I mean I'm hoping it's just decreased filtration.....

There was someone else a little while ago that also had this issue, was it Rod Knock? Could be the vendor storage facility if you guys are both buying them from the same place.

Edit: yep, that was him, and apparently had the same issue with Fram.

that would be my guess, plus bypass is still intact.

I hope this is an isolated incident, and it most likely is.
Still disconcerting. Hopefully other filters will be revealed to stay in good shape.
