Changed my oil for the first time, checked it and it was overfilled according to the dipstick. I put 7 qts in, but its showing high, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch above "safe". I drained it on a slight incline. Did i fail to drain it completely? Doesit need to be perfectly level when draining? Should I drain half a quart and recheck?

Yeah you did, seen that many times friend. Next time drain flat or decline. I would drain off a qrt, just save it for add back. You mean engine was on upside of the incline or truck was facing downhill? You should be ok unless your truck was facing downhill.

Did you start it after changing? In all the oil changes iv done over the years iv found the vehicle needs to be level for a accurate dipstick reading

Did you check it cold, right after you dumped it into the engine, or after you got the engine up to temp like you’re supposed to?

Engine was uphill.

I ran it for a minute to check for leaks and checked it.

I drove it to work (5 miles) and checked it on level ground.

Still read high.

I'll drain a quart in the am and recheck. I'll update.

Your engine couldn't have been uphill! There are no hills in Florida! LOL
I love your signature... my young one (who is now 12) would always correct anyone who would call my truck a car. :)

I drained about half a quart of oil, it is high in the "safe" area on the dipstick. So, about half a quart or so doesn't drain out. Note to self.

On a side note, as I was helping my four year old with his bath last night, I told him that anyone can DRIVE a truck, but only by changing the oil etc, do you truly become one with your truck. I don't know if he understood, but he enthusiastically agreed with me.

Oh he understood it, trust me. That stuff is handed down at a genetic level. To bad the understanding women thing never gets handed down. But then again, I think if it did, the species would likely die off.
