Hey first post on the forum unfortunately not on the best terms. I apologize for the novel I’m about to post.

I have a 2012 Ram 1500 w/ Hemi. It’s got 116,000 miles on it and I took it to the dealer for the 100k service back in October.

Anyways I had the oil changed fully synthetic 7qts 5W-20 (normally I do it myself) prior to a short road trip. About a week later my CEL came on and I check the codes (have a diablo trinity installed) I got P0303 and P1524. So I replaced the coil pack in the third cylinder but not the spark plugs as they were changed less than 15k miles ago.

This resolved the issues for a couple days then P1524 came back on, followed shortly by P0303. Great. Replaced the oil pressure sensor and checked the oil level. Oil level is about 1/2 an inch above the safe zone but oil is clean, no foam, no smoke. Also it might be worth noting that the “oil change due” message on the display won’t go away even if I try the reset explained in the manual.

Idle oil pressure is ~20psi sometimes as low as 18. Cruising pressure is 30psi. Full throttle is ~45-50psi. Normal operation is smooth as ever under 4000 RPM. Whenever I floor it I get a choppy exhaust note and a rough reduced acceleration in high RPMs. Also I’ve noticed slightly lower gas mileage at times. Normal for me (with CAI) is 16-18mpg and I’ve been averaging 13 lately.

I reset the codes yesterday before work to see if they were related. Drove to and from work (80 miles) and no light. Driving to work this morning both P1524 and P0303 came back about 25 miles in while I was cruising and oil pressure showed about 28psi.

I’m trying to get a feel for what the problem might be before I take it into a mechanic and waste money paying him to diagnose it. Also I plan on trading the truck in within the next couple months so I’m not trying to undergo and major repairs. Any idea what the problem might be? Should I just drive easy and trade it in?

They over filled your oil sump Way To Much, drain out some oil and get the level on the dip stick.
Problem with over filling is your crank slaps the oil over and over causing aeration and foam. Imagine cruzing down the highway at 70, your crank is slapping the crap out of the oil. Your oil pump is pumping foamy oil filled with air. Your engine protection goes to **** and the foamy air filled oil can't pull heat from internal engine components.
I would never take my truck back to that dealership.

Okay thanks! I drained about a liter out and it was dirty (less than 2K miles on this oil) and did smell a bit burnt. Going to do an oil change myself tomorrow. Drove it a little bit and it was still choppy above 3500 rpm. No CEL light yet though *knock on wood*
