Hi all,

I have a new 2018 Ram 1500. It has the regular 8.4 inch touchscreen radio (without NAV) in it. If I order an 8.4 NAV radio, would it be a direct plug 'n play type thing? Would I need to take it to the dealer to have something "turned on"? Any info would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Direct plug n play swap. No dealer needed. But why waste your money on nav with outdated maps that you have to pay to update, when you can just plug in your phone and use android auto or Apple CarPlay to display live up to date maps on your screen?

I didn't think Nav would work unless enabled by the dealer, could be wrong there though.

No, changing from an RA3 to a RA4 is a direct plug n play... RA3 has the "dealer" activated nav option, and the RA4 is nav ready from the get go.

I know it is a direct plug n play.
Just thought I heard that once installed the Nav will shut off on a non-nav vehicle - could be bad info as I haven't tried it.

As far as I know the radio is now tied to the VIN and if your Vin didn't have NAV you have to pay for it, are you sure this isn't correct?

Nope not true, I did the swap and nothing else needed. You might need to get the anti theft code from the dealership but I didn't even need that. It's nice to have the vin from the original truck if buying used so you can update the radio software if needed.

Thanks guys. So I've heard that once you swap, you can't register it with Uconnect. True?

I think the 2018's have either a UAS or a UAQ radio and not the RA radios. FCA switched radios in the 2018 Rams. The reason I say that is because if I have the RA3, I could get into dealer mode and turn the NAV on myself. But I don't have that option in dealer mode.

Save your money! Our Navs are junk and updates are 149.00 per. I gave up on mine right after buying new and use my portable Tom Tom. Maybe they have improved them since 2014 but this has been my experience.

I like mine on longer trips, but I always switch to my iPhone once I get close for more accurate info. Definitely not worth the expense. I feel like it’s about a year behind honestly.

They only update maps about once every 3 years.

I have the 8.4 UAS in my 2018 Ram. Can I directly replace this with the UAQ Nav? Plug 'n play?
