Hey guys, I'm new to trucks and transfer cases. I had a question about shifting the transfer case.

I wanted to know if I could shift into 4-high and/or 4-low from 2wd while moving.

Also, beyond what is possible, what is recommended? Should I be in neutral and stopped to shift between drives?

I did a quick search and didn't find anything specific, especially to the 3rd gens. Sorry if this is a ridiculously simple question!

4 Hi can be shifted on the fly but don't force it into 4 low while driving.

Depends on the vehicle for spacifics , my 97 Dodge 4x4 said up to 40 mph , my 2014 Ram says up to 50 mph , I've had some 4x4 s that you had to be stopped , get out and manually lock the front hubs in , some recommend being in nutral ... for you being a 2003 like syl said above 4 high yes 4 low NO , I'd be stopped to go to low . You can shift to high stopped or rolling both in gear , I'd keep it below 40 or so mph . And if you have any difficulty getting it in 4wd stop go to neutral and try , if you have any difficulty getting out of 4wd try reversing 10+ feet and try again . Hope this helps ...

If I go into 4wd high when moving I usually just let off the throttle as it engages just to make it easier on it.

Shifting into 4wd low while moving will make very bad things happen. Don't do this.
