Hi guys. I'm new to posting here. I got a 2014 2WD RCSB 5.7 and I'm about to do some small upgrades, so I'm in full question mode. Anywho, I got a question based on another thread I just read about shorty headers. I know they're not as good as LTs, but simple logic tells me they are a big improvement from the stock logs. Am I right in thinking this?

Anything is an improvement over the cast manifolds. Seems that everyone on this forum is dead set on longtubes though. Longtubes aren't for everyone. Not everybody is trying race their 5000 lb truck and keep the engine up at high revs. That's were longtubes shine.

What do you want to do with your truck? Do you want to race it, or use it as a truck to haul stuff? Keep in mind, when you go shorty, they bolt right up. If you go longtube you will need to have a custom exhaust fitted, so you're not just dealing with the price of the headers anymore, and if you skimp on a set of non-coated longtubes to save money, you'll regret it when they rust out, look like ****, and start leaking.

Posted in the other thread too BUT a custom exhaust is not necessary with all long tubes, ARH and SW bolt right up to the factory exhaust

Edit: apparently the Kooks longtubes will bolt right up as well

Yeah I'm not a racer. I occasionally put my foot into it a little on a clear straight just for the feeling, but that's as aggressive as I get. That's why LTs seem kinda unnecessary for me. I see the shorties as an upgrade from stock, but that's it. All my mods I'm planning are very modest: a slight drop, new muffler, new tires, tuner, shorties, and that's it. I'll be paying this truck off and keeping it, so I just want it to look nice(er) and be fun(er) to drive

I'd be very interested to see pics of either of those installations. Anybody have some?

Edit: I'm just curious to see how a long tube can bolt up. There has to be some cutting somewhere.

Edit Edit: GOOD GOD MAN!!! They're all over $1000 for a set of longtubes! What are they made from? Unobtanium?

Shorties on these trucks are good for about 10hp and at, or just under, a tenth in the 1/4 mile. There are numerous other upgrades that will get you more power for your dollar.

I decided to go with shorties, I couldn't care less about the HP gains.

I just want to get rid of the crappy factory setup. tired of the broken bolts and warping manifolds.

And that is the only time I recommend shorties. They are the easiest swap for anyone that is tired of dealing with cracked factory manifolds and doesnt want to mess with replacing the factory y-pipe and cats.

For anyone that is looking to add headers for performance reasons, longtubes are the only way to go IMO.

Cheapest ones I found in Canada were the ceramic coated BBK at 579$ , I also ordered a RemFlex gasket 34$ and Stage 8 Bolts 85$.

I originally had the long tubes ordered but I did some research and I would've also needed to order a Tuner due to the CAT delete.

Have you already installed them? I'm just guessing you are 4wd being in Canada, but we have had a lot of fitment issues with the steering arm with the BBK's and 4wd trucks. BBK still lists them to fit both 2wd and 4wd, but we have changed our description to only fit 2wd because of the number of guys that had trouble with them. Not everyone had trouble, but we saw enough to stop recommending them to 4wd customers. Hopefully yours go in easy.

Just get yourself a friend over and provide the beer and everything will be okay haha. Having an extra set of hands is nice. I like to do the passenger side first so I feel somewhat accomplished. Driver's side is where you start to get frustrated.

That's the way I work. Get the hard part done first, then everything else is a breeze.
