I recently purchased a '14 ram express and I notice a ticking sound when I first crank up the truck. Kind of sounds like lifters but it quiets down after a bit. Truck only has 200 miles on it.

So it's not just my hemi that does that! I was seriously thinking something might be wrong.

Welcome to Ram forum and enjoy your Ram, with a little effort these trucks are great.

Your lifters are dry at start up and many Hemi's tick before the oil gets there and into the process of them becoming lubricated. There is an additive that "CAN" help, it is called molybdenum. You do not want the type of moly that is in an additive but an oil that has a fair amount of it added. Additive moly is moly in suspension and moly in engine oil is organic moly that attaches itself to metal. Check out synthetic oil thread for more info, many guys including me have solved this issue with an oil choice. Redline, Motul, Shaffers, and Amsoil SS are all high Moly oils, but even OTC stuff like Penzoil Ultra and Platinum and even Mobil 1 have some moly. Also, make sure you oil level is on the high side of the dip stick. If you truck is new, you might want to add a zinc additive to your current oil change. This softens all of the sharp edges of a new engine, after that do your oil change.

Sounds like I need to just go ahead and do a oil change. Break in oil doesn't make me feel comfortable anyway. I read that quaker state synthetic is true synthetic base. I wonder if it has moly in it.

Quaker state has some moly in it, about the same as mobil one but much less then the first 4, read here. Break in oil is completely safe for the first 3000 miles, it has the same stuff as regular oil just extra zinc. Better yet just drop a zinc additive to your current oil. But it's your choice, good luck.

I bought a 2011 RAM last week that had a ticking sound and went away after it warmed up. Concerned, I had the service manager listen to it after it cooled back down because it sounded like the lifters and he verified it was Hemi Tick.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO LIVE WITH THIS!

I was told that the bolts holding the exhaust manifold are defective and the ticking part are the bolts. When the manifold heats up, the metal expands and the ticking goes away.

Over the life of the vehicle it GETS WORSE because the bolts weaken. If the bolts break, your engine is screwed.

There is no official recall for this (he said there should be but there isn't because it is an all day fix and they wouldn't be able to handle that much work all at once), however it is covered under the power train warranty and Dodge HAS TO FIX IT. They aren't going to tell you your vehicle has Hemi Tick. I only found out about it because I wouldn't by the truck if the ticking wasn't fixed. That's when he admitted the story. Mine is being fixed tomorrow for FREE.

I think your service manager fed you a load a **** just so you'd be happy with a "repair" and buy the truck. So what is this MAGICAL fix for a completely normal situation? Your engine is SCREWED if a exhaust bolt breaks huh? Damn, dodge better get ready to replace some motors from broken exhaust manifold bolts (sarcasm). Let us know what they re fixing...

Well, I guess I did seem overly excited. There were 2 situations where I thought he could have been lying to me, so I googled the situations and he was telling the truth, so I have no reason to believe he was lying about this. My 2010 RAM I traded in never had Hemi Tick and he said I got lucky.

After all, he did fill me in on everything and offer to fix it when he simply could have said that it just needed synthetic oil (which I use on every vehicle I own and it did not fix the tick). The fix is to replace the bolts. Anyway, it will have to be documented by the dealership, so if he was lying I guess I will find out.

My point of telling everyone this is that they are potentially avoiding a recall and they offered to fix it for free.

I believe your confusing the broken exhaust manifold/cracked manifold tick/noise with a startup noise which is in the valve-train. Different issues...

I am definitely with you on this one when it comes to the different ticks! I traded my 05 Ram 1500 not too long ago that had the exhaust manifold bolt issues but no motor tick. The previous owner tried to fix a broken manifold bolt and drilled into the water jacket :Frustrated: and many of other bolts loosened up causing a nasty exhaust tick that was a PITA to fix! I now have an '11 Outdoorsman that had the start up tick which I am using Amsoil on, which works great btw. I will take the slight hint of start up tick over the exhaust tick any day of the week. LOL

James my 13' does the same thing. It does it mainly when it sits for 2 weeks when I'm at work. When the truck was new it did it quite often tho but not so much now.Im running Pennzoil Ultra in mine which I read pretty good reviews on it from Burla but it's hard to find for sure.Once I run out if that I'll be swapping to Redline more than likely!

Haven't gotten it back yet, but the service manager said 2 of the bolts were broken off inside the casing which they are going to have to drill out. He said the drive shaft was also broken, which was a separate recall.

Please let us know when you get the truck back.

I agree that your service manager is full of it. I had the same ticking sound on startup and took it in. I took it in for service and told them what I knew about the bolts being prone to coming loose and breaking off. I asked if there was a recall and he told me not officially but they are aware of the problem. My dealership looked it over and told me that two bolts had in fact broken off and they would have to drill them out to fix the issue. They did at no cost to me what so ever. Might need to either call them out or go somewhere else.
