Ok, thought I’d ask, before my ******* tears up my truck ... 2012 1500 w/Reese Class IV hitch ... How good, or bad, an idea would it be to try to pull out some evergreen bushes (bout 4’ tall) with a 20,000 lb nylon tow strap connected bush to hitch ? Strap is 30’ long.

Any experience out there, or just askin for trouble ?

You should be fine. Just don't be stupid. Put in it 4wd low and just gently let your foot off the brake and let the truck do the work. If that doesn't work give it only a little gas. No reason to floor it. If it takes a couple more tries and minutes it's better then needing a new front/rear end, transfer case, or tranny [emoji6]

I did this very thing this spring, pulled the evergreen bushes out from the front of the house.
I use a 12' 5000' load strap and choked the base of the bush. I do have a clevis ring 2" hitch bar I used in the receiver, no chance of the strap coming off which could happen using a ball. I threw a big towel over the strap, just in case the strap breaks. Then like stated above, put the truck in 4X4 Low range and pull away slowly. The bushes didn't even put up a fight, the ground was also fairly damp.
Granted the first gear in the 8spd is lower than the 6 spd, axle gearing is 3.92, and EcoDiesel makes more torque at lower RPMs, a lot of evergreen bushes don't root very deep. You shouldn't have any problems, my neighbor did this a few years ago with a 1500 Chevy [emoji50]
If you have any bushes near concrete, pull away from the concrete and have someone watch to make sure it doesn't start to move when you pull. Also don't try to turn when in 4X4 Low

Dig out at least a 5’ circle and 3-4’ down. Soak the pit for a few days to loosen the soil. Cut any major roots as ya go. Little by little works best versus all at once.

Don’t forget there will be a tap root too.

Make sure nobody is standing anywhere near you. If that strap stretches and snaps loose it could kill someone.

I used my truck to pull out the stumps from a couple of 15 foot tall arborvities.
No problem.

Been there. Done that. Didn't break a sweat until I losded them into the truck to haul off and shoveled the dirt that came with it back into the planter of course.

Granted a lot easier and smaller I pulled out a bunch of rose bushes with my truck. I was digging them up by hand and a neighbor drove by, was like what are you doing dude use your truck. I was like oh yeah good idea. Had them out in like 5 minutes.

Ha ha ha. I used my truck for this and a two strap. Take it slow. You’ll be good. Won’t even feel it

Be sure and use a tow strap (or chain). Don't use a snatch strap, you could end up with the bush in your bed :D

I've done it w/ 12" juniper stumps, and I have two fewer cylinders than you do. Just take it smooth and like everyone said - let the truck do the work for the most part.

I use an old tire with two straps and a clevis through the ball mount hole, then choke the stumps, that way there is some stretch to it instead of blunt force, it's easier on the truck when dealing with larger objects, plus it helps if something lets loose.

You don’t want to use a ball in the hitch as they aren’t meant for recovery. put something over the strap or chain, I’d go a little heavier than a blanket. The idea is if the strap/chain breaks the weight pulls it to the ground and doesn’t go thru your back window & head.

I do them all the time pulled all of mine out. I took a long sawzall blade and cut right into the ground around the perimeter to get through the thick roots no need for digging. Strap or chan around the base 4 low and creep till there is tension. Let of the brake maybe a little gas if needed and comes right out once it pulls up leave it hooked and knock some of the dirt off back into the hole. Forward another foot or 2 to make sure it's clear and all out and you are done. I did 7 in my yard in less then an hour start to finish and loaded into the truck

Use a chain

Yes I suggest this also! I used a tow strap once and when I did it stretched and then catapulted the stump into the back of my truck when it broke loose. Chains don’t stretch lol

I got lucky myself. I started to do it with my 2001 Ram years ago at my first house. My neighbor told me he had a better way, and came over later with a front end loader he borrowed from his work place. Wrapped a chain around the base of the large bushes, wrapped the other end of the chain around the bucket, and up it went. Far easier. :)
