The most economical way to go faster

Hey guys! So I wanna make my Ram faster but do it the most economical way possible. I already have a Vararam AirGrabber and glasspack exhaust to relieve back pressure. I've thought about investing in some headers, a tuner, even a turbo or procharger. Any suggestions for a college kid with only a few grand in the bank?

You say in the most economical way possible and then say you want to turbo or supercharge? Headers, tuner, Ported throttle body is about all you can add for remotely cheap. You could throw a torque converter in as well.

If you have time and energy tuners are the best bang for the buck. Diablo seems to be the weapon of choice.

Hell in college I was driving an 86 Stang with a 3.8! (for 600 bucks) I would have been driving an 82 Capri (2.3l...for $200!) but the day before I was coming home and blew the engine! Didn't mind, I hated that car, no PS, power anything but had PB though! No power,slow, ugly was useless really. Maroon exterior and ORANGE interior!! haha. I suppose the stereo was good, worth more than the car many times over.

I don't know how kids do it nowadays (probably cause they don't buy their own ****, or fuel, or insurance) Hell, even in HS kids parents bout them new Trans ams and stangs and trucks. I don't understand why. Guaranteed waste of money and that vehicle and lasting too long). I buy my own vehicles and was never given handouts.

Then again, Im more akin to Clint eastwood than any skinny jean , Politically correct *****.

In reagrds to the question. buy fuel. Spend any excess you have on rubber (since in college, RUBBERS) and the tickets youre gonna get!

When I was in grade 12 I was driving a 2011 Ram 1500. My dad bought it and I was paying him for it. I paid it off to him in 4 years (pretty damn good for a kid) and sold it in the spring of 2014. It was a good truck and I got tons of use out of it. I've graduated college and have a very well paying job that I love.

When I sold my 2011 I put a huge down payment on a 2014 Longhorn that I had ordered. I've dropped over 10K cash into it in 6 months while paying it off. That truck will be paid off completely before I've had it 1 year.

I was fortunate to get a great job right out of school (I'd been working there for 4 years prior while I was in school) That's how these "kids" can afford to buy expensive things.

I'm not dissing on you or trying to give you a hard time, just simply explaining how it can be done

Yes there is, however my point was that when you see a young person driving a nice vehicle, it doesn't always mean their parents bought it for them.
It's like on YouTube, everyone is so quick to hate on a young person with something nice because they think that the kids parents bought it. Granted I'm sure many times that is the case, but for someone like me who has earned what I have, it's frustrating to be put in the same category.

I'm not so young anymore so I don't think I'm seen in that same light as much, but I know how it feels!

I'm out in Alberta for business this week and it amazes me how many young guys are driving these amazing lifted trucks! Oil money I guess! Lol

To the OP- a DiabloSport tuner with HemiFever tune is probably the next step. Contact Matt @ Moe's Performance for one, I think the HF custom tune is still included for free. Should set you back about $5-600.

Other things you could do- add a throttle body, LT headers, underdrive pulley, clutch fan delete. Moe's Performance sells all these things.

As for a turbo/supercharger- just don't. They cost way more than you would think at first. I think the kits are almost $6k, plus install is going to be a ton depending on how much work you do yourself. You'll also want to have set aside enough cash for a whole built transmission for when you blow yours.

Bang for buck, I would start with an InTune DCX w/ Hemifever tuning and tq converter. You can get both for right at $1000, and they will completely transform your truck.

Get your degree and a good engineering job. Then you can afford parts. Speaking from experience here.

You kinda make it sound like if you were driving an old f150, you wouldn't have been successful. How does having a newer truck aide in achieving what you want in terms pf success. BTW, howd your ram 1500 carry all that welding equipment? Oh wait, it doesn't. Seems to me you could drive to work in anything if you're not actively using the handout your folks gave you for your career, maybe a corolla is better suited for your needs. Coulda got one for free probably! (free to the extent it doesn't come out of your folks account)

FWIW...i make a good living since college too. And i dont remember ever borrowing a dime off my parents for anything even in rough low paying teen years. From 12+ working. Admittingly, i didnt have surplus cash, but i sure as hell didnt waste it either. Why waste it on a new 40k truck when a beatrr will get me there , and show me how to fix it when it craps out. Not ***** cause its in the shop for warranty. But what good is life experience huh?

I could envision buying my kid a car (when / if i evver have one)...i can guarantee it wont be within 10 years of a new model regardless of his behaviour or success in school.

Reward for graduating high school? That's like parents googoo-ing over their baby for taking a dump. My reward for graduating high school was my parents paying my college tuition. And I'm eternally grateful for that. And I drove to college in a $500 Dodge Stratus with a huge chunk out of the front bumper. It took me 6 years and a few strokes of luck to have the means to even borrow from the bank for the truck I have now lol... Previous to this one, all my trucks including my last cammed Laramie worth about $20k... were all bought cash. My cash.

When I entered my junior year I was given my parents 95 Ford escort with about 130k on the clock. I drove that car all the way until I graduated college so 4 years and I got rid of it with 185k on it. I wish I would have never gotten rid of that car because it got good mileage and was awesome in the snow, I could be driving that and saving miles on my ram.

I noticed he hasn't posted again and with only 11 posts and asking a legit question and having it turn into some philosophical debate about being given, verses having to buy your first car/truck I don't think I can blame him.

high school was defeintly the fun days....never been in a trans am but pleanty of my buds camaros. And btw ur right my ram dosent carry anything others then some mig pliers and a welding hood....I work in the railcar shop. And yes I do honestly believe have a nice dependable truck played a big part in my so far success. Call me a spoiled brat a little punk whatever it may be but it's the way I feel about it. I was a privalaged child and not ashamed about it, don't think I'm better then anyone else or nor do I think anyone else is better then me. But what I'm trying to get across is why be a butthurt of a parent buyin a vehicle and just because if they do dpsent mean that child will be some lazy **** poor excuses of a person I mean hell it could be worst they could grow old and afire and cry with some kid on a forum about being spoiled and ****. We're all the same u wake up every morning and bust your ass at ur job just like I do every night. You pay your bills and contribute to society as dose every one else. And as far as your 77 sure it was a nice ride and all the power to you. And as far as you buying your kid a vehicle that's your choice I'm sure a hell of a dad probably a better one then I could be right now in life, as I'm not ready for a child due to I only care about my bank account, beer, women, and how full my damn catch can is.
