Hey guys I have a 2012 Ram 2500 longhorn 6.7 with the 68RFE. The transmission is bad and I found one out of a 2017 Ram 68RFE with 6k miles on it. My question is are they interchangeable being the 5year difference? Thanks in advance for any input.

The 68RFE from the 2017 donor truck will work just fine in your 2012.

Does the transmission from the 2017 come with a torque converter? If it does not come with a converter I would suggest a new or a reman unit instead of using the converter from the failed transmission that is currently in the truck. It could be filled with debris and metal shavings if you had a catastrophic failure and you dont want to put the old converter in the new trans and send that debris into the new unit. It can cause all sorts of problems, especially in the valve body.

What exactly is wrong with the current transmission that is in your truck?

Make sure you pull the pan off of the new unit and replace both the sump filter and the spin-on return filter. I dont care how many miles are on a used transmission. I always pull the pan to do an inspection and to replace the filters. Use black RTV to seal the pan when you are finished.

Also, have you looked at having your original one “ Upgraded”? By upgraded I mean over built to take the torture you are going to throw at it.

Hey guys thanks for the response. I bought the 2012 as a flood truck got it running and the Torque converter seems to be locked as soon as you put it into drive it kills the engine. I did get it too go once and drove it a little bit and it down shifted real hard and kept locking and unlocking the converter. Codes it was throwing are P0731, P0841, P0876, P2706, P1775

Need a metal trans thread upgrade that allows synthetic filter, there is a thread on it here. A ram member just got the guy to list them singly on ebay, check it out. I found this one, but look for the hex one if you can find it. Also, these video's are great explaining the needed upgrades for the rfe and valve body. Once upgraded, the rfe is a pretty good tranny.

I’ll look into that thanks for the information. Anyone have an idea what could be wrong with the transmission in the truck?

Water most likely shorted something electrical going to transmission.
