What octane do y'all run?

To my understanding, if your motor doesn’t ping/knock on hard acceleration from low speed, a higher octane is not needed.

Octane itself doesn’t add power: higher compression and advanced timing does. Higher octane resists ping/knock of higher compression tuning, which gives more power.

I did run 87. Like was said I don’t like to do the minimum. The HEMI is tuned for 89 so that’s what I use and She’ll seems the best. 89 is $.30 more then 87 in VA. I normally put about 18-19gal in a fill up 2x a week. So for $10-12 a week I put what is recommended in. Some people like $5 coffee and I guess I like better gas.

I mostly tow an RV with my 5.7 third gen, and what I really notice is the Ram pulls much harder on No Alcohol fuel of any kind. On the flats, with no wind I can get over 10 mpg pulling a 7500 lb 5th wheel. If I have to buy alcohol gas, power goes down along with the mileage.

If I can get no alcohol 92 octane I buy it no matter the cost because it pulls the grades so much better. On trips I have a map of stations with the fuel I want, and a tank of 50/50 No alcohol 92, and mid grade alcohol gas runs ok. If I run 100% cheap alcohol fuel it KILLS my power, and mileage Period. I've proved it time and time again. My 2 cents.

Higher octane isn't as susceptable to preignition , therefore knock sensor doesn't detect preignition and retard timing. I would rather not have preignition than depend on a sensor to detect it and make adjustments after it has already happened.

I have a 2010 Ram 1500, Shorty headers, custom 3 1/2" exhaust from "y" pipe with Flowmaster muffler, K&N FIPK intake, Diablo tuner with Hemifever tunes, 87/89 standard tune, and a custom 91 octane tune. I've seen no gas mileage difference between the tunes, but big diff on performance. Also I only run Chevron or Shell gas. When I was getting the custom tune from Hemifever he could tell I was running a different gas (Costco which is suppose to be top tier) So I run 89 oct most of the time and avg. 17-20 MPG on freeway and 16-18 combo. I run it pretty good on freeway generally between 70-80 MPH

Running a 5.7L with KN CAI and aftermarket exhaust... Truthfully I don't even know what kind. I've briefly looked but I don't see any stamps. It sounds amazing though...

I was thinking of filling up with 91oct today.. any benefits?

there is always a benefit with running higher octane....(detergent wise) it burns cleaner and slower.....most high compression motors specify it......I run 93 when I can 89 usually

Same here. And depending on what I’m doing (heavy towing and long road trips 93)(around town 89.
Better fuel mileage with the 93 on long trips

I was given to understand that "detergent wise" there's no difference between the grades. Only the octane and anti-knock additives.

Someone on the forum once metioned that they heard from several good sources that the mixing of 87 and 91 at the stations to
make the 89 can really be a crap shoot as to whether or not you're actually getting 89 or closer to 87 or 91. Ever since then for the extra $5 or
$6 it costs me per tank to just go with 91 is what I always do now...

I’ve ran 87 in Every vehicle I’ve owned. Never had a blown engine or any issues. I have put 89 in my 2500 and well only thing I noticed was a lighter pocketbook. Fuel & oils seem to be the hot topics on forums and nobody will ever agree lol. Do what works for you and whatever you wanna do ;)

Well this is my two cents worth I know this will cause great debate but here goes anyway! In my area all 87 octane fuel has ethanol in it and the majority of 89 octane does also there are a few stations around that has 89 non-ethanol but for the most part 91 is the only non-ethanol fuel available I will not use ethanol fuel in anything period. ethanol fuel is terrible for your engine and it's components it leaves higher carbon deposits on your injectors and through out the entire system, ethanol is also a moisture attractant so it brings more water into the system any anybody living in cold brutal winter climates know that water in your fuel tank is not a good thing. I personally get 3-4 miles per gallon better mileage, and I know that does not offset that added cost of the fuel but knowing that I'm not putting the impurities through my engine and avoiding the trip to the dealer to get a decarbonization far out weighs the cost, My son is a tech for a dealership and tells me of the crap he sees all related to the poor quality of fuels available today, so again this is just my two cents and my opinion and my prerogative to ensure my RAM performs to its maximum performance for years to come.

Maybe I'll actually be able to use that lifetime warranty I bought someday, who knows but I'll stick with the 87 unless towing.

Run E85 in my flex fuel Ram 1500. Pump says 105 octane which my research confirmed. I did not believe it at first but found out some NASCAR teams will use Ethanol blends as high as E98 for the octane rating. Something else I didn’t know...go figure.

It may be high octane, but it still kills your mileage.
