Running a 5.7L with KN CAI and aftermarket exhaust... Truthfully I don't even know what kind. I've briefly looked but I don't see any stamps. It sounds amazing though...

I was thinking of filling up with 91oct today.. any benefits?

I just run 87, and every couple of months add some Lucas Fuel Injector cleaner in it.

My 5.7 gets mid grade 89 like it calls for. since I bought it new. They say its tuned for 89 from FCA and will keep throttle body cleaner with optimum performance. A few cents a gallon more for 89 over 87 is no big deal for me.

It may be high octane, but it still kills your mileage.

Higher octane means you can dial in more timing and add more boost before it will combust. I don't think anybody racing worries about mileage.

Please don't overuse that stuff. It will create nasty carbon deposits all over the inside of your engine.

I started out running 89 as that's what is suggested by FCA. But lately I've been running 87 to see if it makes a difference. As of now, I'm not seeing any change in performance or MPG.

Buying higher octane gas when you don't need it is just throwing away money.

Off subject but just wanted to say Damn that yellow is beautiful!
Ang i use regular or 87

Here is straight from the 2018 Ram 1500/2500/3500 Owners Manual:

https://www.mopar.com/moparsvc/tweddle/publications?id=244

This engine is designed to meet all emissions regulations and provide satisfactory fuel economy and performance when using high quality unleaded gasoline having an octane range of 87 to 89. The manufacturer recommends the use of 89 octane for optimum performance. The use of premium gasoline (Over 89 octane) is not recommended, as it will not provide any benefit over regular gasoline in these engines.

Just as I did with my 3rd-Gen Hemi Ram, I always ran the “recommended” 89 octane just because I felt that recommended was recommended.

But I’m curious- if a lot of you say that you haven’t really noticed any difference In performance or mileage between running 87 and 89 unless it’s the no-ethanol 87, what’s the point in Ram telling us that 87 octane is fine, but 89 is recommended?

Other than the knock sensors, can these trucks tell when you put either octanes in the tank?

Yes when you run 87 octane the computor pulls timing and takes away power while it's doing it. I would guess its not much at all and must be really at heavy throttle to WOT because it seems nobody can feel the loss.

IMO 89 is really only needed if you run your truck hard or pulling/hauling heavy loads.

With that said I mostly run 89 but every now and then I will fill up with 87 when I am just going to burn through a tank of fuel on the hwy or something.

Well, you may be right. I haven’t consulted my 18’s manual regarding it but I think it mighta mentioned in my old truck’s manual something about towing or heavy use is when 89 was preferred but I don’t remember.

But as the poster before me said, it’s only a few bucks more to filler’up with the good stuff so why not give Baby what Baby wants?....lol.

Right, I do the same thing with my oils that I run in my truck why not spend just a few bucks more.
Guess I pretty much do it with everything I buy for it anymore.

For the last few vehicles I've bought, I got through all three octanes, 3-5 tanks each, and check the mpg just to see if it makes a difference. My 01 Dakota loved 89 - improved mpg by about 1.5, no change going to premium on that one. My Mazda got.5 mpg better on higher octane so ran 87 in that one. The Ram is about .3 mpg difference between 87 and 89, so I've been running 87. I'm about to make a trip to FL towing an Accord, so may put 89 in just as a precaution.

I've bought one tank full so far. It was 89 and plan to stick with it. I know it costs more but my Ram is getting about 50% better mileage than my old truck. In fact, the last time I checked my old truck was probably 2 years ago and 12-13 was the best I could do at the time so I quit checking. We also use 89 in my daughter's 2013 Ford Focus as it runs smoother than with 87.

I can't get above 11.5 on city streets...

If I’m not mistaken, when you tow is when you really should run 89. I’ve always just ran 89 in this new one and in my old one because of the manufacturer’s recommendation but just to change it up, I just filled up mine yesterday with ethanol-free 87 so I’m gonna see how that goes for a tank or two.
