I called my local dealer and they quoted me a price of $475 to do it??? Has anyone else priced that at the dealer? Seemed low to me from seeing some past information online. Anyone else had a similar quote. I know I can do it myself by buying the parts. I am not super handy and really don't want to mess with it.

Back when I originally called for a quote at my dealer it was estimated at $800 and change. Never saw a dealer quote that low so I would ask what's included. Are you sure that was all in, parts and labor?

I would have to get it in writing but he said new pan, fluids. Looks like parts+ an hour of labor?

I know the price of the fluid recently went down a little but I don't think it would make that much difference???????? That's the best price I've seen from a dealership----

Yeah well I would literally watch them do it at that price. I think the 8 speed is so tricky the only person I'd trust to do it is me. Sean left some good work on dyi's, check out his youtubes, he has a couple on transmision...

Also see motor city mechanics check level procedure.

While we are on the topic, does anyone believe the whole "lifetime fluid" deal? I believe in following the manufacturers recommended service, but when the transmission is left at "lifetime fluid" it's hard to tell whether or not it's worth the change. Has anyone had issues from not changing it? Personally, a buddy of mine has a 2009 Lexus LS400 with a "lifetime fluid" tranny and he has had no issues, it still shifts buttery smooth.

Seems a low price compared to everything I've heard. Especially with this fluid selling for like 40 bucks a quart retail and the mopar filter/pan pricey at the dealerships. I plan to do it myself this summer, seems straight forward process.

They did a uoa on a non lifetime fluid after 450k miles in a rav4, and the oil was still in good shape, high wear metals but oil was still good. And there is a large body of evidence flushes and even drain and fills can cause damage. And the zf fluid is as high as quality as you can get with the pao base oil.

But, here is the thing with the 8 speed, they heat it up more then 30f over the rfe, so no way do I think zf fluid will last a lifetime because of the temps it operates at. I would be at a 80k mile interval if I had an 8 speed.

ZF themselves recommends changing the fluid and filter between 80,000 and 130,000 Kilometers /roughly 50,000 to 80,000 miles or 8 years which ever comes first.Who do you want to believe the guys who engineered the tranny or the guys (FCA) wanting to sell you a new truck every couple years,me I lean more towards believing the guys who engineered the tranny, lol. Be forewarned very few video's lift the back of the truck up high enough to level the transmissions pan rail, and that's a very important step to get the proper fluid level reading at the fill plug.

I wouldn't risk it depends how "lifetime" is defined. People that get bored with their vehicles and trade in when they hit 100K probably would be fine.

I’ve got a LIFETIME warranty on my powertrain. I called ZF and have their maintenance schedule for the 8HP75-LCV transmission in my 2500 which I am comparing to FCA’s requirements which are limited.

I just saw the OEM mopar filter for $190 online and $25.50 x 6 quarts for the fluid retail online. I am guessing the dealer can get it for cheaper and charge maybe an hour labor??? So, the $475 may be legit.

I had 235,000 miles on my 2003 tacoma lifetime tranny fluid & zero issues.
