Hey folks,
I brought my 18 Ram 1500 to the dealer because the truck would not take fuel. Pump just shut off every 5 seconds. I know this has been an issue in the past with other Rams and it requires a fuel tank replacement. They changed the filler neck first to see if that cured the problem. It didn't and I called the dealer 30 minutes later. That's how long it took to fill it. They told me they would order a new tank and call me when it came in. Ok I'm good with that.
I dropped the truck off on 5-5-20 for the tank swap. I get a call a day later saying the mechanic broke the fuel pump when taking the old tank out and they need to order a fuel pump. I get a call today saying the truck is done. I pick it up, drive home 10 minutes. Look under the truck to see my nice new fuel tank and what do I see? A tank that looks like it was bottomed out rock climbing, gouged in three spots.
So my issue is: if this is a used tank and not the updated version that doesn't fail, what if this one fails too? I have 4k left on my warrantee. It took my new truck's tank 30k Miles to fail. (Do I have the right to a new tank?) The paperwork is also written up as if I reported a check engine light on. It wasn't. I'm guessing that was to cover their ass on the fuel pump mishap.
Thoughts????

That's not a new tank.
I'd take it to a different dealer and get Corporate involved. Looks like they got a junkyard tank so they didn't take a hit on a new one under warranty.

That looks like it was used as a fileting table at the docks.

Holy crap thats pretty bad!! Obviously NOT a new tank unless they took your truck on a rock crawling test drive!!
I would be back there ASAP with pics you posted and where is my new tank questions.
If they told ME that they were ordering a new tank that is what I would expect to be installed.
Hope your dealer works this out with you as that most definitely isnt new

That makes zero sense. The dealer doesn’t pay for parts under warranty. Why would they purchase a tank from a junk yard on their dime when they could get a new one from Mopar for free?

Anything short of a new tank and I'm getting corporate involved. Especially because they did it to cover up the fact they broke the fuel pump and wrote it up as a failure so warranty covered it.

The dealer pays his mechanics and gets no money from the customer. And I'm not sure they get warranty parts free, does anyone know this for a fact? Someone somewhere along the line pays for those parts.

Yes, I know this for a fact. Warranty parts are free. The manufacturer pays for them. Therefore your original assumption would be wildly improbable, as I originally stated.

Why then would the dealer install a used tank if it's no skin off his back to get the new one?

To cover up the fact that their tech broke the fuel pump and didn't want to eat the cost. Probably cheaper to RIP one out of a junk yard pump and all attached. Unfortunately I'm the guy that gets under my vehicle to check the work.

I wonder if one of the mechanics swapped his beat up tank into your truck & put the new one in his. The fuel pump excuse was a stall tactic to give him time after work to swap them???? Just sounds too suspicious to me.

Isn't what we are looking at just the plastic tank cover and not the actual tank itself? Or do they not have covers

Even if that is a cover, it's not mine. My truck has never and will never go off roading. It's a 1500, a glorified grocery getter.

Can't tell from the pic, does the tank look new otherwise ? Could be somebody dragged it instead of carrying it.

I kinda thought the same at first but unless Roseanne was riding it at the time the scratching looks too deep for that.
