how many hours does it take to according to the labor guide to replace cam and lifters? are then any special tools needed? just preparing for the worst. I spent a few hours researching information about the 5.7 hemi this morning. it seems that the issue is there is not enough oil being splashed onto the cam at idle because of the distance it is located above the crank assembly then because of the angle and placement of the lifters the oil does not drip down on the cam but instead it drops just outside the cam circle. why didnt ram stand behind this issue? it appears to be a major issue with the 5.7. Even if I do a cam lifter replacement what is to keep it from happening again?
I will replace the fuel injector on #5 before i remove the valve cover but only because the issue started almost immediately after I filled up with fuel. I know its a long shot.
I may go look at other trucks later today. Does the 6.4 have the same issues?
Thanks
Rod

Quite wasting time on "Maybe's" and deal with wha tyou got.

Diagnose it, if you cannot, then pay someone.

Lift teh valve cover and see if that lobe is mosing the lifter. if it is, then that ain;t your problem adn your truly wasting energy adn daylight on what is NOT the Problem.

figure out teh problem, then do your due diligence on the actual issue.

Still driving the truck with trailer for mowing. Still have no ticking noise at all. Truck is still setting a cyl 5 misfire code daily. I am hoping to pull the valve cover on thursday to look at valve movement.
If this ends up needing a cam and lifters I was wondering if anyone has gone aftermarket like summit racing? What are the specs of the OEM cam? I called the local Dodge Chrysler Ram dealer today and spoke to the parts manager for about 20 minutes. I went to school with her so know her well. She said she couldnt find any information on the cam specs at all. SO my question would be what are the specs of the factory cam and lifters, could I go aftermarket thru summit, And would it cause me to have CEL issues and not pass emissions?
Ive decided that I will do the work myself.
Appreciate your thoughts.
Rod

If you had a dropped Lifter, You'd hear it.
if you had a worn cam Lob, not lifting that lifter up enough, you;d still hear it.

Try this cheap fix and cross your figners. Go pick up somje chevron techron, from wlamart or anywwhere, and run a tank of it through your syste.

I know you ran seafoam and that is great stuff but each does something, just alittle different.

So I finally had time to remove the valve cover and the #5 intake lobe ain’t movin the rocker. So now all my guessing and hoping that it could be something else is gone. So far it looks like there could be an availability issue with parts. I’m not up to speed on reflashing or reprogramming my ecm so I’m looking to just stay with stock parts. My local ram dealer said they are having trouble getting lifters. Cost of lifters when found will be roughly $1200 and cam close to $500 from the ram parts. What are other options? Summit racing can not supply lifters either and said June/July delivery.
By the way, there is still no tap and no noise. And it only misfires on a pull with trailer hooked up.
Doesn’t matter now that it’s verified so it will be torn down this weekend.
I’m sure I will have some questions as I go and I do appreciate those that have responded with good information.
As for oil to use going forward I will be doing some research trying to find the best oil that’s available locally here that matches the Ram specs.

If you want to stay stock I always order from rockauto the dealer is never the place they mark stuff up. They have the mopar cam in stock As for lifters yes getting mopar lifters is hard right now as much as I am not a fan of enginetec lifters its the only real cost friendly option at the moment I just put them in my 2014 and a few others rams it gets the job done.

Today I started to tear the engine down. I spent about 4 hours on it. All I have left to remove is the lower damper and the timing cover. Then remove the heads. All rocker arms and push rods are out. Intake is off, water pump has been removed. Radiator is out. I did remove the inner fenders which saved me from laying down into the engine compartment.
My issue is that I haven’t found a supplier with a complete set of lifters yet. Finding the cam doesn’t seem like that will be an issue. I won’t know about the timing chain set until I get the cover off but I’m thinking of replacing that and water pump while it’s apart.
Now I’m also thinking about removing the oil pan and pump and cleaning them really well. Do most of the cam replacements go with or without removing the pan? What are the thoughts?
I’m also thinking of going to Brad Penn 5-30 oil from here on out. It has zinc in it which will help with lubrication.
Thanks, Rod

to properly remove and reinstall timing set yes oil pan should be dropped at least enough to get oil pickup tube bolt out and yes oil pump must be removed to replace timing set and even if your not doing a new timing set do not try the quick way of trying set the timing with oil pump still on you cant see marks worth a damn. timing is too important to half ass pull some cheap stunts like that take the time pull the oil pump so you can see what's going on you do not want to do job twice I know someone that tried this and bent a valve due to timing off then had to have his heads reworked which meant pulling it down again just my two cents. And I have done this very job on mine so I know what is involved

I ordered the melling stock cam, seal power lifters, head bolts, complete gasket kit, timing chain set and oi pump today. I am definitely going to pull the pan down to clean it up. Is there any tricks I should know about this oil pump and timing gears/chain. I’ve never done one of these hemi’s before.
Thanks Rod

Just watch the step by step MMX youtube HEMI rebuild video. Follow it to a T and you wont have any issues.

Kurtis has a good write up on replacing the cam/lifters.

I got the dampner off tonight. I had to try a bunch of different pullers until i found one that worked. Now on thursday i will finish removing the timing cover, heads, cam and lifters.
My parts came today. Summit is great to do business with. Their delivery is always super quick. All i need to find now is an oil pump. I wont get this done until next week some time as we are going away this weekend.

No matter what else you do, ONLY USE OEM LIFTERS. I have yet to hear of a good alternative to OEM.

So i spoke with a tech today and he explained some things that he highly recommended for me to replace. So i came home and i ordered a new phaser, oil pump and pickup and vvt solenoid.
Heres a question i have.
The pump is a melling which is standard volume, high pressure. It comes with a 65 psi stock pressire relief spring.
Will i need to install that spring or can i just go high pressure spring it comes with?
I wasnt sure how the high pressure spring would effect the vvt solenoid or the phaser.
Thanks, rod

From what I've seen you should be fine with that oil pump. My son is in the middle of the same job with his 2015. He's putting in a hellcat oil pump. This issue really sucks and I'm hoping my 2013 holds out for a while. I'm at 146k but very low idle hours.

I would recommend going with a good filter like Royal Purple or Mobile 1 and Redline 5-30 for the oil in the future to help protect your hard work.

The latest tip is to use the High volumn Hellcat pump, not a high pressure standard volumn Melling pump. These 2 video's are a bit long, but are worth watching
