Oh also. If you do the transfer case while you're down there. (You might as well, its easy). we have the BW 44-47 transfer case.

So you need the Signature series Multi vehicle ATF. The number on that should be ATFPK-EA.

P.s. If you do change the transfer case oil. Please be aware that the plugs have a TAPERED thread. so they will not screw in the entire way. If you try, you can crack the case..

I know you didnt address me.. But as you can tell, i watch these forums with an eagle eye!! lol.

The Amsoil website can be a bit confusing. But if you look at the SKU number on all of them, They are the same. So you need SVGPK-EA which should all be listed under the different options on the website.

A lab is one thing. Having diffs fail early is another. I don't recall hearing of any diffs here (or elsewhere) failing with regular maintenance using any type of fluid that meets OE spec. At least not because of the fluid.

We're all enthusiasts or we wouldn't be here. And we all want the 'best' for our truck. But it's not 'best' because of the lab, marketing, or internet videos... 'best' is a fluid that provides the required lubrication and is economical enough that you can do regular maintenance intervals.

I’m about to swap everything to Amsoil. Watch Gale Banks video on rear diff covers before buying one! He doesn’t make one for the 1500s but I’m going to email them and ask if they plan on it today.

Yes! This right here....couldn't agree more with that statement.

This is pretty convincing. There are more test on YouTube.

PF makes some pretty good videos but his oil videos are far from scientific. I would say the majority of them are purely for entertainment purposes only. HELL I'm even a subscriber and watch all his videos.

That being said gear oil is pretty expensive regardless of what brand you buy whether its conventional/synthetic or name brand or not doesn't seem to matter. I recently changed mine out and put Redline in and I paid a whopping $3.72 extra per quart over what Supertech what have cost. Personally when it comes to maintenance I don't give a FF about saving a buck. Amsoil and Redline are the best and are worth the extra money to me.

That head to head thing he did makes no sense. When you evaluating something you evaluate all the measurements among all the candidates.

Also, you are correct about the cost issue. If you change your gear oil at 60K miles; it is a few cents per 10K miles.

Another good gear oil is Castrol. It is popular in Europe and supports racing there.

https://www.ramforum.com/threads/ch...ou-havent-yet-and-clean-those-lockers.154492/

I thought that was a very interesting thread. Changing oil early to get the break-in metal out isn't something I've thought about too much until recently. Apparently getting the break in metal out of the electronic locker components makes a difference in how they operate. That makes sense. I've seen a few people talk about this in the last year or so. I do know new/rebuilt engines shed most metal early because we change filters after a few tests on my engine dyno, and cut them open. We run a filter magnet. There's always more break in metal in the filter after the first few tests than at the end of the session. This seems to be a good reason to change engine oil, transmission oil, transfer case oil, differential oil, power steering fluid earlier than recommended. Guys who've done that with automatic transmissions said they always had less trouble with them. They were talking about changing within the first few thousand miles. Not sure where I read that, I'll try to find the conversations. Again it does make sense to not circulate break in metal any longer than necessary.

Opening back up! Need the transfer case and transmission Amsoil part numbers. Just hit 135,000 miles. Going back in for these two.

You should read some of the transmission fluid threads on the forum, the 8 speed does not take the same fluid as the transfer case. There are only a couple officially licensed fluids but some people have had success with aftermarket fluids. You will also need a new pan as the filter is attached to the pan.

You are correct. Thats my bad as I didnt realize it was for a 2020 model with 8 speed trans. I seen it has 135,000 miles and didnt think twice since it was that new of a model year. But I do know they are much different. Thanks for correcting me.

No worries, didnt want him to run out and dump a bunch of the wrong atf in his trans. I do think Amsoil has a fluid that meets the 8 speed spec, but most people are using Valvoline Max Life that meets the spec as an alternative to Mopar fluid. It's a different beast to change fluid on but not that difficult once you figure out the procedure.
