I have a 17 6.4 with 139k miles, oil pressure, oil level and temps are all normal when driving/idling. Did a remote start this AM, it was 30f outside and when I walked outside after maybe 5-10 mins the truck was knocking hard. The knocking completely went away once it got warm. I have replaced the spark plugs in the past, coils, thermostat and radiator with all hoses, all pulleys and belts. Truck had an oil change the day before at my normal shop. It’s normally cheaper for me to let them do the 5 min oil change but I have have to start just doing my own redline changes. Just curious on what everyone thinks until I can get it to shop this upcoming Monday if I don’t dump it by then.

Not 100% sure it is garden variety hemi tick but could be. For what it is worth, it doesnt sound like piston slap to me. 95% of me thinks it is lifters, maybe 5% chance it is valves, as in maybe a bad spring. Did you check for oil level? It is full?

BTW, that knocking was most likely piston slap, that is what it sounds like. But that wasn't what I hear on recording.

Oil level is good and clean, I did not look at the bottle but they always have the parts house deliver it since they don’t stock it. So I did watch truck come in and do it. Just tried to crank it again after letting it sit for 5 hours now, it was fine no knock at all it’s 42f and still a tad warm if that matters.

Yeah that totally matters, from reports on the board piston slap usually happens first start and below 40f. You will know tomorrow, the only known fix for piston slap is to run a 0w30 and it only lessons it. It is metal shrunk out of tolerance, oil can only do so much. But that is different from the other tick in the vid. I'd dump 15 pounce biotech in since it is new oil, it may help.

Should I also add the best fix to cold piston slap is a sump or engine block heater.

Got it scheduled for Monday at shop, got to add in some nice grinding noise to the mix, pulled belt and didn’t sound like any of the idlers or pulleys which they are pretty much all new, same with belt. Water pump has a little flex to it when pushing down on fan but nothing crazy so it may be starting to go.

I decided to just change water pump last night despite 0 play in shaft, no overheating or any signs it was the pump. I played with each pulley and couldn’t find another option, changed and have 0 noise now.

If who ever you have do your oil changes does not use correct oil you can do major damage. All these new cars have different tolerances that’s why it’s recommended to use certain oils for different vehicles. It’s not like the old days where you can use a 1040 oil or a zero30 you have to use whatever they tell you with the numbers that correspond with that oil.

"5 min oil change?"

This probably has nothing to do with your water pump noise. I don't know what they charged you, but I hope the speed of the service is worth it.

The grinding noise matched the same hearing noise of every video I had found. Water pump was indeed bad, bearing was coming apart on shaft. I replaced coils and plugs at 100k miles as general service, idlers and belt due to the plastic also being shot. I didn’t pay for any of that to be done by a shop. I use shops for Diagnostic not parts changers I can do that myself. I have a trusted mechanic that’s family and is more than happy to let me know what to change in order to not have to pay him.

Yeah it’s unfortunately part of living on the road. I should do it myself but that convenience is just so hard to be until it bites you in the butt.

Because of reliability issues I'd rather have an old OEM coil than a new aftermarket.
