So I am having warranty work done to the motor and getting a new Cam, just wondering if it is a good idea or needed and the pro's/cons's of putting a hotter Cam in on a stock motor til I get it all set up the way I want it as a rolling project?

I would talk to some tuners first and see if they have the tuning dialed in yet. There is a 35 page thread here somewhere that had a couple guys came their trucks and tuning didn't seem to go well.

For cams I'd talk to 2 people, Dave at Modern Muscle Performance or to Jay. Dave has already put plenty of custom grinds into the cars and had them tuned properly by Johan or AJ. Jay's been great at the 3rd gens and is going to be doing a custom grind in his 4th gen, but it's currently unproven.

I'll 2nd talking to Dave at Modern Muscle. He and I are actually working on a heads/cam package for my 5.7 Ram as well. We are going to try to touch an 11.99 on the 5.7 block before tossing the 392" in.

If I need heads to support it I'll let it be till I get that wild with it. if I can build off it slowly I'll put it in..

I'll give Dave a hollar, I gotta decide this fast cause they are tearing her down right now.
But it would be more a buy now and stuff in kinda deal. If its a custom thing I'll design it around the replacement motor once this isn't my daily driver in the next year.

I definitely 3rd Dave. Custom grind cam. Also of a benefit is the new vvt unlocker that just came out. It allows the vvt to unlock without oil pressure. Benefit being able to check valve clearance at full retard when the cam is installed.

Currently tuning two cammed 4th gens with great success. One remote and the other local.

Will give you advice, steer clear of Inertia Motorsports cams and tuning. Also stay away from the Comp grinds on the trucks. Those two things should be a given...

And have a cam going into my truck very soon, optimized for the 8 speed of course.

Jay, I have a comp cam. Got 50-60hp/80tq with that and heads. Not bad for off the shelve and it's barely a performance cam over stock. Any input you could give is appreciated. Thinking of putting a custom grind in anyhow.

Sorry, off topic. But have you confirmed with your dealer that they're willing to put a non-stock item into your truck and work with you on this build under warranty..? And then still warranty it?!

If so, cool dealer...

The 266 is a very large cam at 218/226 with over .600 lift and 7 degrees of range of motion. I have no idea what Comp was thinking having this as there entry level cam. When the stock cam is a 186/208 and just under .500 lift.

Jay, I thought our Stock cam was 268/290. Intake opens at 28.2 (btdc), closes 239.8 (atdc) duration 268. Exhaust opens at 274.2, closes 15.8 duration 290. Not sure if those numbers are at .500 lift, but those are the numbers I was told.

No not yet, but I'm pretty sure they would install it but no more warranty. I'm close to it being up so its a trade of or risk I'm wiling to take.
But from what I have been researching most cams even mild suggest valve train or head work and I think that is pushing it to request the dealer to do. So I'll shelf that idea and go back to the performance spare engine build I will start and swap in once it's slowly built at a later date. I'll pick up a used motor and redo it out of the truck while I'm still driving it. I tend to do this with most my stock vehicle im do serious performance mods to

I am 99.9 % certain the dealer will not install your cam for you. It opens them up to all sorts of liabilities if something goes wrong, even if it voids your warranty. If it ever goes to court, the courts usually rule that you as the dealer, are the experts and should say no if you feel this is something that can cause damage later.

We used to have people ask all the time at nissan if we could put new cams in their 350z when we did their timing chains under warranty. It's a big liability

I'm curious about this cause they do alot of performace type add on's like in the old days at this dealership. But yet most parts are mopar performance parts.

There's a world of difference between them installing mopar performance parts or other warranty approved, mopar approved parts and them installing your custom ground aftermarket cam. Every part they install has passed mopar standards for being safe to use. Your cam would not fit that category because they don't know enough about it. At nissan, we installed nismo performance parts and Stillen brand parts, even their superchargers, with a warranty. But someone who showed up with some cams in hand was out of luck.

Also, they have to bill every part for the repair to chrysler warranty. If they're replacing the cam, they have to sell an oem cam to the ticket. And they're not gonna want to commit warranty fraud for you to have your cam put in. All performance accessory installs have to be customer pay labor, chrysler ain't footing the bill for that **** lol.

You can ask, but I would seriously do that before buying a cam. Because I'm pretty sure they're not gonna do it.

True, I was looking into it before I asked. I'm not going to do it and rush it cause so much other stuff needs to be done valve train wise. most cames I was looking at or reading about suggest new valve springs at the minimum so I'm going to hold off to do it all right and not blow things up.

Valve springs are good to do, but some believe they aren't required for a mild cam. If you decide to do them, you can do em pretty easily in the truck if you have compressed air handy.

Also the specs you were given not make sense. The valve events that is.

Also a 32 degree split is ridiculous...

I've never made sense of it either, just thought it was a vvt thing. When I get home, I'll check what specs I have. Those numbers come from tech authority on my '13.

I'll do them at a later date with a cam and heads. for what I'm thinking and planing I think I need more than a mild cam.
Was just thinking since she's been opened up I could sneak it in but there is more work to do to make it 100% or at least me to feel comfortable it done right and reliable.

I'll just have to be patient till I buy another vehicle and this becomes another toy and I wont have to rush it.
