Dechroming

Today is once again a rainy day and being a golf professional means no work for me so decided to do some work today. I had two questions:

1. Can I remove the chrome handle covers that came on my truck? If so is it similar to debadging (heat it up and peal off)?

2. I want to plastidip my rims black and they came with the chrome clad covers, I was wondering should I remove the covers to plastidip the rims of leave them as it?

From what I know, you can't remove the "chrome cover" but you can remove the handles & paint them. I ordered some factory paint to do all of my handles and mirror covers as well. My plan is to remove the door panels, remove handles, separate handle from base (there is a thread on how to do this out there somewhere), and then sand/paint/clear them. I wish it was as easy as debadging! I know you can also order the handles from Mopar that are "factory matched" if you dont want to take on a DIY paint job!

As far as the plastidipping goes... I'd take them apart if I was going to do it but I know if you do that you will still have to dip the outer edge of the wheel as well. Otherwise the outer edge will still be chrome. There is a thread on how to do this as well under the 4th Gen DIY section!

You'd need to replace the handle covers with color keyed handles from a Sport or something.

You'd clean the chrome clads well and then do a wipe down with a pre-paint cleaner. Isopropyl Alcohol will suffice, tape off what you don't want coated and start spraying.

Chris, I think you are wrong. I believe there was a thread recently about the chrome clads being just that, some wheel (aluminum I would guess) with plastic chrome cladding over the top that utilizes an adhesive. I think some searching would turn up results on this, and I think the discussion was within the last month.

Yep. The chrome clad on the wheels can be removed. Granted, it's not easy, as its held down with some heavy duty cement glue it seems. But it's definitely doable.

OK, the GM ones are a lot different then... They have a CRAP TON of epoxy on the back side filling in the area and what not. They are SO not removable and if they are, they're heating them up a lot to get it done.

Wow yeah, MUCH different than the GM CC wheels I'd played with. If it didn't have a pound or more of epoxy filled into the crevices on the back side, I'd put in with ya. It was nuts!

Ok thanks for the info guys, since I am going to use these as my spare wheels I am going to probably skip the removal of the chrome clad because it sounds like a PITA! But the conciseness is no go on the removing of the chrome on the door handles? I found a few of them made by mopar to replace them which I might do so I don't fudge up the DIY too much.
